Australian Xbox price decapitated

Microsoft Australia has announced a savage price cut of its videogame system, the Xbox. It is a drastic reduction of the recommended retail price (RRP) by more than thirty-eight percent, a cut of more than AU$250.

The cut comes as the competing system from Nintendo, the Gamcube, is due to reach store shelves next month on May 17. The Xbox RRP is now AU$399. The launch price (RRP) of the Gamecube is also AU$399.

This shuffles the price hierarchy of the three available current-generation video game systems. The Sony Playstation 2 is now the most expensive unit at AU$499. The Xbox and Gamecube are now equal at AU$399, a massive deviation from the expected gradual price-reduction process. Microsoft is suspected of sustaining great losses on every machine at this new price due to the in-built DVD player, hard drive and networking equipment the Xbox has, which the Gamecube is lacking.

This aggressive move may ignite a savage Australian price war between the vendors of the three console systems, Sony Computer Entertainment, Nintendo and Microsoft. In Germany, retailers fought a bitter battle over the Xbox machine alone, causing prices to drop well below profitable levels.

-This is a strategic, competitive decision," Alan Bowman, director of Microsoft's Australian Xbox division said today.
-The fact is, our pricing here (in Australia) had become uncompetitive and we felt it an obstacle to the Xbox experience." he added.

Mr Bowman acknowledged the bombastic nature of the new pricing tactics: -Since our launch the market has changed - and we are now being unashamedly aggressive in changing it ourselves,"

The reduction announcement was accompanied by the news that Microsoft will be offering a gift to consumers who have already bought the machine, with a retail value of AU$250, the exact monetary size of the price cut. The gift involves two free Microsoft Xbox games of the customer's choice and an extra Xbox controller. The offer is effective from 26 April, 2002. Existing customers can visit the Australian Xbox Web site www.xbox.com.au or call 1800 148 894 for details on claiming their gift.

Don't care how much they cost......I will never help Microsoft extend it's Monopoly in any way , shape or form.

I will never pay for a single Microsoft product again , and that includes operating system's and all games and peripheral's which roll out of factories bearing their name.

I trust them as I would trust a salivating Lion telling me to come closer I don't want to eat you.

Isn't this dumping? Xbox was already being sold at a loss of US$30 to US$100 even at the old price.

This new price is clearly an attempt to influence the market by selling the Xbox way below its cost of manufacture, clearly with the aim of putting Nintendo and Sony out of the market. Will Microsoft get away with it?

Don't be so ridiculous people! ...Anonymous -- 18/04/02

Don't be so ridiculous people!! Nintendo will always be around simply because it targets a niche market (although they are definetely going to come last).

Sony has used dirty tactics before, MS is only giving them some of their own medicine back.

None of the other systems had such a great range of titles this far into its life. The PS2 sold on hype alone, and the Gamecube sold on what future games it would be getting (which constantly get delayed).

It looks like Sony is about to get pushed off its high pedestal. Someone had to do it since we all hate monopolies.

I said it two years ago, and I will say it again: the X-box is a still-born, AGAIN... (just like MS’s last game console failures).

With THAT marketing budget, they should have been able to sell Alaska to the Eskimos, but instead they have just dudded out again.

    You KNOW that:
    • Sony will halve the cost of PS 2
    • PS 2 can play PS 1 games as well
    • The big developers are already WAY dedicated to PS 2
    • PS 2 isn’t a hacked down PC, but a purpose built, dedicated games console, therefore
    • PS 2 doesn’t break like X-box
    • MS can’t get Windows right, so how can they get X-box right?
    • No one trusts Microsoft

The one good thing about all of this is that it’s good for consumers, as Sony, the undisputed Konsole Kings, will NOT relinquish their market to Microsoft, and we all stand to benefit as a result.

I even saw the PS 2 at the Adelaide Motor Show AND at the Big Race (V8 supercars) recently.

    It’s a Sony (for me)!

Jill, you are one sad individual. The Xbox is selling well in America. As for Europe/UK/Australia, the Xboxes are literally going to start flying off the shelves. The only complaint these people had was the price.

At least Microsoft listens to their customers unlike some companies I know (cough....Sony....cough)

Who has sold more? PS2. Which is the better console? XBOX.

Hmm, what will you buy now that the xbox is cheaper and better? The xbox!

Last season PS2 sold 1.4 million units, with Xbox not far behind. This is despite the xbox being an entirely new system. Sales statistics have shown that PS1 owners will more likely buy a ps2 even if it is just to play games released on ps1 as well as ps2.

Regardless of what any die hard fan of either xbox or ps2 or gamecube will tell you, at this moment in the game console market, the xbox is the best specced console. (http://www.psreporter.com/xbox_system.html)

MS have the ability to ship more units at the same period of time than sony did for their release of ps2 which also should see sales accelerate past the ps2.

The really sad thing is that first generation xbox games still look better than second generation ps2 games. Wait for the second generation xbox games.

I am waiting for the rel price war to errupt, and then I am buying the xbox.

Bought a duty free Windows 98 SE Update in London back in 1999, had trouble with it and rang the Sydney Office. They would NOT supply me with tech help because they said it was purchased outside of Australia and I need to contact their UK office.I thought help was available from anywhere around the world irrespective of where you purchased it. Oh the almighty $$$. Just wondered where you got the idea that microsoft listen?

Why do you think MS is trying to get into the console market? Becasue they are selling less and less of their software products! I still use Win95/Office 97 so who needs to upgrade an OS and Word Processor? The PC has reached a peak in performance so do you think people will be upgrading PC's in the next 5-10 years? NO! MS is packing sh**! What happens when PS3 comes out? MS gonna drown. Consoles probably worst venture MS can get involved in I reckon ;-)

The price of the XBOX in Europe has also just been slashed to £199 (approx $278 US) - it isn't selling.

Microsoft apparently "tested the game controller on thousands of players" in order to arrive at the
optimal design. Shame they only tested American players ... the Japanese hate the XBOX controller!
Sales in the US are also slipping, and there have been reports of XBOX physically damaging DVDs by scratching them.

Notice the pattern? Low quality, bullsh*t and heavy handed control of the media to make sure only the Microsoft spun view ever gets out.

Quote : "Microsoft has had its teeth kicked in, in both Europe and Japan", said John Riccitiello,
president of Electronic Arts Inc., the biggest U.S. video-game company, in an interview. Electronic Arts makes games such as Madden Football and FIFA World Cup for the Xbox".

Each console probably costs $15 to manufacture somewhere in northeast China or Indonesia, and another 5 bucks to ship in bulk around the world. Wouldn't be surprised if no one "sustains losses" even if they sold the stuff at $30 a pop! People will still need to buy the games, just like people have to buy ink cartridges after buying the printer. That's where the real money is, boys!
