Australian Tax Office backs creaking eTax system

The Australian Tax Office is scrambling to reassure taxpayers that its eTax system, understood to be operating extremely slowly, is not about to collapse under the weight of demand.

ZDNet Australia   has received reports that the ATO servers have been flooded with last-minute applications, and have almost completely collapsed under the strain. Today is the deadline for businesses and individuals to file tax returns for the 2001/2002 financial year. A mere two days ago the ATO was expressing confidence it's servers would handle the load.

This morning spokespeople were extolling the virtues of patience.
