Australia speculates on PS2 price cuts

Sony Australia cannot yet confirm plans to slash the price of its PlayStation 2 game console, despite rumours throughout Europe that the electronics giant is set to cut prices in order to remain competitive.

The game console war is hotting up, after Microsoft slashed AU$250 off the price of the Xbox to AU$399, and Nintendo today announced the Gamecube would launch at AU$329 rather than the original AU$399.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia declined to comment, but said the managing director of the company's Australian arm will be talking to head office tonight in order to clarify the situation.

If Sony does cut prices in Europe, there is still some question whether that will be duplicated in Australia.

-Australia has a tendency to follow Europe, mostly because of the PAL format, whereas America uses NTSC," Phil Burnham, research manager with IT channel research firm Inform told ZDNet Australia. -But you have to remember the PS2 is cheaper here than anywhere else in the world." The PS2 was launched at AU$749 but now retails for AU$499.

However, the PS2 still remains AU$100 more than Xbox, while in the UK the prices are the same at 199 pounds sterling.

According to Burnham, the Xbox hasn't had much effect on the sales of PS2, which he describes as "very strong".

Why would they cut the PS2's price now, surely they would wait and see if the sales slow and then think about cutting it. I've only seen one demo Xbox but it didn't impress me as being anywhere near equal to the PS2, hopefully the Gamecube will be a better competitor, but ultimately, it's the games that make the PS2 the best choice.

So are you worried about your poor ps2 console becoming obsolete Karl? Come on... how about some unbiased opinion here. I saw a ps2 running pac-man in a shop window when I was racing past it at 100 kilometers an hour last year. It didn't impress me much. :-/
If you're going to comment make sure it's constructive. I have friends with the ps2... it's a great machine. I own an xbox. It's also a great machine, with a hard drive to rip music to and use as a music jukebox. It also saves me the cost of buying a memory cartridge to store saved games on. All of the consoles have merit. Keep your "my console is better than yours" comments for the schoolyard.

Tim, great constructive comments, I see the error of my ways. Of course you missed the point which was, Sony as yet has no reason to cut their price until their sales suffer. I know all the consoles have their merits, but it's the quality and variety of the games that drive sales, not which console has the most graphics power etc. I hope MS keep their promise of $250 worth of free accessories now they dropped the price by 40% Tim.

I'll tell you why Sony should reduce their price: People (including myself :) are on the market for a new console. PS1 is getting REALLY long in the tooth, and Dreamcast is dead in the water.
The first generation of PS2 games were pretty lame, because the console is so hard to program for. Now the newer games properly utilizing the PS2s abilities are here, but XBox has arrived with first generation games which handily surpass PS2 second generation games.
There may not be a ton of games for XBox yet, but how many games can you afford to buy in the first few months anyway? I have a wish list of 5 XBox games already.
Consequently, unless Sony drops their price to less than the Xbox's price, I'm buying an XBox.

Just don't pull a Sega, Microsoft!!!!!!!! Or I'm installing linux ;-)

They will only reduce the price of the PS2 if it starts to drop a lot in sales. The PS2 in the U.S. is still the same price as it was at launch because people still keep buying the darn thing.

But anyway, even if the PS2 did drop to the same price as the Xbox, the Xbox still gives you much better value for money.

I just hope that Telstra doesn't do something stupid and screw up the whole Xbox broadband gaming thing, or is that too much to ask??

If console makers are serious about dominating the market by playing around with the price, they should convince their software vendors to consider keeping their game price down. It's the games and that matters most. I think XBox gives you better value for money over PS2 with or without the price cut. I am also very impressed with the quality of graphics on the XBox but that still won't convince me to trade my PS2 for a XBox just because I didn't fine any of current XBox games appealing to me. I am holding on to my PS2 because I have faith on developers of PS2 games that they will continue to make better games than XBox releases (and stop making those boring sequels). Until the day we can play all games on one console, fanatic gamer like myself will always be willing to pull out couple of hundred dollars more for a console with better games - PS2 or Xbox (even Gamescube).

Regarding this comment made by Charles:

"They will only reduce the price of the PS2 if it starts to drop a lot in sales. The PS2 in the U.S. is still the same price as it was at launch because people still keep buying the darn thing."

Actually the price of the PS2 in the US has been dropped from $399 US to $199 US (roughly $390 AU).

I believe the PS2 is a better gaming system than the xbox. xbox games are largely unimpressive, and of the few I've played I actually found the PS2 to be faster, with more responsive gameplay. The fact remains, I'm still not wealthy enough to dish out the $500 asking price for PS2's in Australia. Until they drop the price to $400 I think I'll pass.

Maybe I'll get a Gamecube and hope they release the latest Res Evil game in Australia. At least the price is reasonable.
