The Commonwealth, the ACT government, the NSW government and a consortium of universities have committed AU$230 million over the next five years to establish and develop the centre.
The chairman of the organisation, Neville Roach, said the organisation was established to lift the level of Australia's research to global standards to ensure that industry is adequately supplied with R&D professionals. It will also facilitate commercialisation of research.
"ICT is the dominant industry of our time and the engine room for commerce and economic growth in the information age," said Roach.
NCITA CEO Professor Brian Anderson said NCITA would employ more than 300 researchers and lead to the creation of around 500 doctoral research places at universities over the next 10 years.
