The Australian Telematics Services Hub (ATSH) is -the digital glue that connects the dashboard, mobile phone, motorist, fleet manager, auto manufacturer or importer and content provider," according to Intelematics Australia chief executive officer, Adam Game.

Providing services through a hub masks many of the differences between vehicle and communications architectures, providing the market scale needed for commercial success.

Intelematics Australia is a joint venture of the Royal Automotive Club of Victoria and NRMA Motoring and Services, which has established ATSH as an extension of the clubs' roadside assistance and information services.

-The ATSH is a secure Internet node through which messaging, content and location information can be intelligently relayed, scheduled and reformatted," Game said at the ATSH launch in Melbourne last night, which included a live demonstration of a Monaro CV8 being directed to the event.

Current telematics services such as automatic crash notification, security monitoring, stolen vehicle tracking, remote diagnostics, SOS and remote unlocking will be augmented with traffic warnings with integrated navigation, location-based information (hotels, restaurants, etc), concierge services and downloadable entertainment. Intelematics Australia is partnering with key players to provide quality, affordable and valued services, said Game.

While 'telematics' has a broader definition, in this context it refers to automotive systems that combine GPS tracking with wireless communications to provide a range of services and facilities to the motorist.

ATSH services and appropriate in-car equipment will be available as an option for the Holden Monaro and Statesman, but the hardware can be retrofitted to other vehicles and some services delivered to computers, handhelds or mobile phones.
