Betty Kight, a US-based senior data warehouse consultant at software vendor Teradata, believes that no matter how effective the technology is, if it's not run properly the enterprise won't get optimum business value out of it.
Kight has been visiting Australia talking about best practices in data warehousing, and how this responsibility is shared across business level and IT managers.
She sees it being a cultural shift in organisations needing to address issues of who in the business deals with what functions. In businesses' use of datawarehousing, Kight said she increasingly sees users needing to carry out tasks which were previously the domain of the IT department. "Quite frankly, the business doesn't have time to ask someone else to do that for them."
But, because of this, Kight said there becomes a need to put controls around the environment because the users are not necessarily technical people. She said that it was important for the IT department to be involved in understanding the business value behind the technology, so that they could see the importance of their role in this.
