Aussies to escape eBay pop-ups

Local eBay users will not be troubled by the pop-up ads that are set to infiltrate the screens of their American counterparts.

Describing online advertising as something that is nice to have rather than something that is needed, eBay.com.au spokesperson Miranda Carter assured ZDNet Australia it would not be following the US initiative.

-We're not looking at doing pop-ups on eBay.com.au," she said. -Online advertising is still relatively new on .com.au so we're more sensitive to users experience and are taking the softly-softly approach. Thus we're quite conservative when it comes to the type and style of creative formats we accept."

eBay.com is trialling pop-up ads after seeing the advertising portion of its revenue fall from 13 percent in the last quarter of 2001 to eight percent in the first quarter of 2002. Carter said the percentage of revenue resulting from advertising on eBay.com.au is -absolutely miniscule".

-We're very lucky in having a unique business model that doesn't rely on advertising," she said.
