Aussie PC market defies world trend

The Australian PC market is picking up, with an analyst report showing a year-on-year growth of 14 percent for the second quarter of 2002.

Despite a worldwide trend of static growth, a report by IT analyst group Gartner Dataquest has found the Australian market displayed double-digit growth over the last 12 months.

"After several quarters of negative or flat growth rates, there is a positive indication that things are starting to turn around, with stronger replacement rates starting to materialise," said Gartner PC analyst Andy Woo. -However, we still need another strong quarter of growth before we start 'popping the champagne'."

"If the third quarter, traditionally a slower quarter, continues this trend for strong growth, it will clearly show that replacement rates amongst end users for pre-Y2K systems are taking effect," he said.

The mobile PC industry grew at a year-on-year rate of 24.4 percent, with consumer and professional end-users migrating to mobile computers as an alternative to desktops, according to Woo.

The largest market growth came from new arrival Acer, which posted a year-on-year unit growth rate of 189.6 percent, making it the third largest manufacturer with a market share of 8.4 percent. Dell had a unit growth rate of 6.5 percent, giving it a total market share of 10.1 percent, and HP topped the list with a market share of 22.2 percent, and a unit growth rate of 12.6 percent.
