Aussie IT staff worry about job security

Fear has hit Australian IT professionals, with a growing number concerned about hanging onto their jobs.

A survey conducted by recruitment consultancy TMP Worldwide, has found that about 40 percent of respondents who worked in IT had an employment back-up plan in case of redundancy or retrenchment.

Martin Nicholls, Australasian practice director for technology at TMP Worldwide, said that in the past nine months it had seen an increase in the number of candidates available. -That's related to the economic downturn, which hit IT quite heavily," Nicholls said.

The survey also found that more than eight percent of respondents thought that they would be the next to go.

But Nicholls added that it was important to look at the difference between IT staff's perception, and reality.

Nicholls said sometimes staff were unnecessarily worried about job security.

-It's a suggestion of the amount of insecurity people are feeling," he said. -Organisations need to do something to comfort their people wherever they can."
