-Some companies have GPS tracking, and some companies have the ability to offer proof of delivery (POD), we offer both and in a real-time scenario, and that's a world first," Karen Turner, national business development manager of Allied Express told ZDNet Australia.
The new system allows customers to track their consignments online to within 50 metres, and have the location displayed on a digital map, which allows customers to request changes to their delivery if necessary. Customers will also have access to current information on their consignment, including drop-off time, POD and the name of the person who signed for the consignment, which will be available within seconds of delivery completion.
-The POD is something that eludes most companies," according to Turner, -so getting that in real-time is vital, communication is a lifeblood."
According to Hernani Inacio, who is in charge of Allied Express' management information systems, the key to the success of the new system is the extensive infrastructure owned by Allied Express.
-It is the development of infrastructure that allows us to integrate in real-time," he said. -We own our infrastructure, we own base stations, receivers and relays, so we are a carrier like Optus or Telstra." However, there are no plans to lease part of the infrastructure to third parties, he said.
The company has invested AU$20 million in development over the last decade, with the latest investment costing AU$1.5 million. Turner believes this heavy investment will give them some leeway before the competition follows them. -We probably have about six months grace," she said.
The next wave of innovation will be the introduction of single palm technology through SPT 1700, which will be introduced in a few weeks.
