AU government opens regional broadband fund

The federal government has invited expressions of interest in securing a slice of the AU$23.7 million in funding made available to boost broadband access in regional Australia.

The Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Daryl Williams, released a statement today saying the funding -- made available through the Coordinated Communications Infrastructure Fund -- was open to applications from partnerships of groups such as health or education service providers, governments and telecommunications carriers.

"For example, a local government or community body might jointly develop a project with a State government and a telecommunications carrier that could demonstrate the benefits of broadband to their community," the statement said.

Successful projects must also receive at least matching contributions from sources outside the federal government.

Just how can this money help us realize that braodband is good.

Having download limitations on broadband is just a waste of time and this money to try and convince us we need low limited FAST access to the internet. People spending upto $40.00/mth for 350mb are stupid, yes I call you stupid. I get 2gb on my dialup, yes its slow, but I can download 9 times more then any user using a minimum broadband plan for only $14.95/mth.

When is the government going to step in and force greater download limit to the minimum broadband plans, since that what broadband is for, getting your data quicker, not fill the IPS's pocket with money quicker.

The money spent here would be best used to improve the braodband infrastructure and make broadband for everyone to use, not just the idiots who are being ripped off and the rich and stupid who don't care.
