AU$140 million spent on ICT research

More than AU$140 million is spent annually on public sector ICT research and development in Australia, according to a recent study.

A significant proportion of ICT research was performed outside the IT, engineering or commerce faculties of universities, according to the study conducted by IT management consultants Whitehorse Strategic Group.

Rodney Taylor, practice area manager at Whitehorse, told ZDNet Australia that the study had been commissioned by Multimedia Victoria, which is part of the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional development.

Taylor described the study as a "snapshot", with public sector research bodies, TAFEs, universities and other organisations contacted for the survey. Respondents were generally people who administered the programs, research heads, or deans of departments.

The study also found that than 2400 full-time equivalent researchers are employed in ICT research and development in Australia, according to a statement from Whitehorse.
