Ticketmaster7 managing director, Maria O'Connor, said the process whereby members enter details which determine what class of ticket and type of seating they are eligible for had become corrupted, prompting the agency to drop the Internet channel to avoid breaching state legislation governing sports ticketing.
The AFL said on its Web site today it had been informed by Ticketmaster7 of the issue at 4pm Thursday. The tickets are due to start going on sale from Sunday.
The problem affects information already sent to members of the Geelong and St Kilda Australian football clubs, two of the four teams contesting this weekend's preliminary finals, the AFL said. However, due to different procedures used by members of the two interstate clubs involved in the matches, Brisbane and Port Adelaide, they are not affected.
AFL chief executive, Andrew Demetriou described the shift as "regrettable," saying the league had requested and successfully obtained extra agencies for AFL members and a "fully staffed call centre" to assist club members.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is expected to host 80,000 patrons at this year's Grand Final on 25 September.
