Telstra has announced its online music site, BigPond Music, will begin offering live streaming of concerts and video hits for free this week. The sites video collection will be updated every week, kicking off with the latest releases from such artists as Beyonce, The Streets and Spiderbait. The first live concert to be streamed online will be performed by Jenny Morris, commencing on 3 June. BigPond managing director, Justin Milne, said the new features are a "fantastic element" for both music lover and the music industry. "Not only is this great for music fans but it represents a new opportunity for artists to get exposure for their work," Milne said. The launch follows the closure of thebasement.com, a strikingly similar broadband music site that featured live video and audio webcasts of music segments. The popular site was jointly owned by Telstra and Chief Entertainment; a company owned by well-known Sydney broadcaster Doug Mulray and former Triple M chief Hamish Cameron. Telstra says BigPond Music's content will be boosted later this year with the addition of performances recorded at Sydney's The Basement venue.
