Qantas IT staff consider IBM work offer By AAP March 02, 2004 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/business/soa/Qantas-IT-staff-consider-IBM-work-offer/0,139023166,139116386,00.htm
More than 160 Qantas IT workers have until Friday to sign up for work with IBM, ahead of an anticipated outsourcing deal between the corporate giants. Qantas would "in coming months" sign an IT outsourcing deal, an airline spokeswoman said today, with 161 staff poised to be offered redeployment at IBM. She would not reveal details of the deal under consideration, but the Australian Services Union (ASU) said IBM would deliver Qantas' IT operations, voice and data communications, desktop, radio and enterprise service management. The ASU said workers had been offered employment contracts with IBM, but many of the 161 affected staff were concerned about accepting employment before any outsourcing deal was finalised. "People are being asked to commit to a transfer date they don't know," ASU assistant national secretary Linda White said. "There certainly is no certainty about when they're going over." White claimed staff also were being offered different working conditions. As of last week, only 32 staff had agreed to work for IBM, she said. "We've advised our members not to sign anything," she said. Staff were particularly concerned about their long-term futures at IBM, particularly in the light of claims work was being contracted out to India, she said. "Those who are going across to IBM are less than confident how long they'll be (there)." They also believed Sydney staff would no longer be working at Mascot, near Kingsford Smith airport, but would instead be located in Sydney's west and north-west. Some Melbourne IT staff also were affected, she said. A Qantas spokeswoman said staff had been told in April last year that a review of Qantas IT was taking place, and she confirmed workers would be offered jobs with the outsourcing providers. She was unable to give a firm date for the signing off on any outsourcing deal. "No contracts have been signed but a final decision is expected in coming months," the Qantas spokeswoman said.
