A new index measuring jobs in the telecommunications sector brings good news for telco staff but bad news for IT jobseekers in general, according to Robert Brand, who compiles the Badja ICT Telco Jobs index.

Information and communication technology jobs in the telecommunications sector have more than doubled over a three month period, according to Brand, who is a director of consulting company Badja. "It's showing an enormous ramp-up over a three month period, we're seeing almost double the amount of jobs," he told ZDNet Australia.

"In the IT&T sector last month the Olivier Internet Job Index was pretty flat," said Brand, who pointed out that a significant percentage of that index was the telco industry. "I'm afraid the IT sector is in a rapid decline."

Robert Olivier, director of Olivier Recruitment Group, told ZDNet Australia   he disagreed with Brand's conclusion. "Inevitably at this time of year the numbers go down," he said. "The raw IT figure [for November] is down by 0.3 percent, and on a seasonally adjusted basis it's up 11 percent."

"It's held up relatively strongly within the month of November which is an encouraging sign for the sector," said Olivier. Olivier includes IT and telecommunications jobs together because they are advertised that way on the job boards, and was skeptical of claims raw job figures increased dramatically during November. "If he's saying raw job numbers are going up I find that hard to believe at this time of year," said Olivier.

The two indexes cannot be directly compared because they obtain raw data from different sources. Although they both search CareerOne and Seek, Olivier searches MyCareer while Badja includes two minor job services.
