Qantas has confirmed its intention to review the future operation of its Sydney data centre, with outsourcing high on the list of possible changes, chief information officer Fiona Balfour has confirmed.

In a statement issued yesterday, Balfour said "As part of a review of IT services, we have reached the conclusion that our current infrastructure and equipment no longer meet our continually growing IT needs.

"We have therefore begun looking at possible alternative arrangements for the future.

"These include outsourcing data centre operations to experienced service providers who can acquire and manage the delivery of these services on our behalf".

Balfour said the airline would keep the 230 staff involved "fully informed" during the review process, which was likely to take 12 months.

"Should we proceed with any outsourcing arrangement, all staff would be offered employment with the new service provider or, where necessary, redeployment within Qantas".
