Australian IT exec jobs not rising: Olivier By James Pearce, ZDNet Australia August 11, 2002 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/business/soa/Australian-IT-exec-jobs-not-rising-Olivier/0,139023166,120267150,00.htm
The latest Olivier Internet Job Index has contradicted reports last week of a growing demand in Australia for IT executives. Robert Olivier, a director at Olivier Recruitment Group, told ZDNet Australia that there was some increase in demand in smaller Australian companies, but this has been off-set by a continuing caution in larger US-based companies. -The area with the greatest growth is desktop support and help desk, lower infrastructure needs. That's shown perhaps the only big rise in the month in the IT sector," said Olivier. -It's more entry level and up to middle management, 30-80K, but higher levels are still desperately quiet." The Olivier Internet study, he said, is more statistically significant than studies that focus on newspapers, because of the greater number of online ads. -This study is Internet-based and that's where the bulk of IT is advertised," he said. -There is, perhaps, some good news for the IT&T sector this month, with a mere 0.4 percent fall in jobs advertised. This compares dramatically with a 12-month drop of 60.6 percent. -IT professionals are like a skier coming off a steep downhill run onto the flat. The question is whether they still have to negotiate a slalom, or a cross country to get to their next job," Olivier said.
