Security concerns local online shoppers: survey

Australian consumer discomfort with disclosing credit card details is still holding them back from shopping online, according to a global survey.

More than 36 percent of Australians surveyed, who didn't purchase online, didn't want to disclose their credit card details when making online purchases, according to the survey from research company Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS).

-Whilst there is clearly potential for e-commerce to grow amongst Australian consumers, adoption has been curbed by personal security fears," James Fergusson, national director for telecoms and IT at TNS, said in a statement.

Earlier this year more than 42,000 people were interviewed for the company's global e-commerce report.

The report found that 26 percent of surveyed online shoppers planned to shop again within the next six months. However, 23 percent of Australians surveyed said that they felt it was safer buying goods or services in traditional bricks and mortar stores.

In Australia the most popular purchases were books, holiday or leisure, theatre tickets, groceries or other food items.
