Australia may have new second-level domains names if interested parties can provide auDA with a sufficiently convincing arguement for establishing them. The new .au second-level domains would exist alongside existing second-level domains (2LDs) like .com.au and .org.au. auDA CEO Chris Disspain said that interested group would need to demonstrate a community need for the new 2LDs. "There is no technical limit to the number of 2LDs that could be created," Disspain said. "But auDA's view is that 2LDs should exist for a specific, well-defined purpose that serves to maintain the overall integrity and usability of the .au domain." .au Domain Administration (auDA) is also accepting nominations for membership of the New Names Advisory Panel (NNAP), which will be evaluating the proposals. The closing date for proposals is May 31 2002.
