More than 9000 domain names, up to 150 of which may have been registered by Australia companies, are under threat as .info registry Afilias plans to file a bulk challenge against registrants with a UN organisation in Geneva. ZDNet Australia has learned that the registry plans to file a bulk challenge about these names with UN body, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Roland LaPlante, chief marketing officer at Afilias, spoke with ZDNet Australia from the US this morning. "Those names appear to us not to be held by legitimate trademark holders," he said. He also confirmed that the registry received word on Friday that challenges it had already filed with the WIPO over more than 740 registrants had been upheld. Mid last year Afilias held what it referred to as a sunrise period, where trademark and intellectual property holders could register their name with .info. Following that, Afilias opened .info up to the general public. During its sunrise period Afilias registered about 52,000 domain names, and LaPlante said the registry had realised that some of those names would be subject to dispute.
