The Federal Privacy Commissioner's office has begun investigations into complaints about non-compliance with Australia's new privacy legislation. A spokesperson from the Federal Privacy Commissioner's office said it was looking into 23 complaints which it believed warranted further investigation. He said that calls to its hotline had increased more than 100 percent since the legislation came into effect on December 21. "Before the Act came into effect we were getting a lot of calls from organisations and lawyers," the spokesperson said. "Now those calls have tailed off and more individuals are calling." According to the spokesperson, the complaints the Federal Privacy Commissioner's office has been receiving have centred around four main issues. This has included collection of information, specifically the unnecessary collection of information. Complainants have also taken issue with companies using information for direct marketing where there is no option to opt out; disclosure of information; and the security of data.
