A survey by human resources consultancy E.L Consult found the demand for IT executives in December increased more than 78 percent over the previous month.

E.L Consult's research found that in December demand for executives across all industries surveyed rose for the first time in five months.

Grant Montgomery, managing director at E.L Consult, said it has been conducting the E.L Index on a monthly basis since 1991.

Montgomery believes they give a good indication of the executive market in Australia. -It's a very good leading indicator of economic activityââ,¬"-people tend to hire executives when they're confident about the future."

Although Montgomery doesn't believe we'll ever see demand returning to what it was at the peak of the new economy, he believes it will increase again.

IT fared particularly well in the index, which E.L Consult credits to the immediate economic effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks now -washing out of the system".

"There has been a sizeable downturn since the last quarter of 1999," Montgomery said. -However the downturn in demand was brought into stark contrast by the events of September 11, triggering a crisis of confidence."

The E.L Executive Demand Index is a monthly report which looks at demand for executives in Australia. E.L Consult also conducts the EL Index in regions such as Singapore and Hong Kong/China.
