VERITAS extends protection By Philip Luces, ZDNet Australia April 18, 2001 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/business/soa/VERITAS-extends-protection/0,139023166,120216343,00.htm
Data availability software specialists, VERITAS, have announced the extension of support for its data protection software for NAS and instant messaging appliances to more platforms. VERITAS has added backup and recovery support in its NetBackup product to NAS file servers from Procom Technology as well as to instant messaging servers from Mirapoint. NetBackup already supports NAS devices from Network Appliance, EMC and Auspex. Dennis Martin, analyst for the Evaluator Group, explained, "As organisations increasingly choose network-attached storage appliances to meet specific file- and data-sharing needs, the ability to protect the information on those appliances becomes critical. The range of NAS appliance support offered by VERITAS NetBackup, along with its ability to provide a comprehensive and complementary backup solution for an entire information infrastructure, makes VERITAS Software a clear leader in this market segment." A software agent that integrates well with the VERITAS NetBackup DataCenter, called VERITAS NetBackup NDMP, uses the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)-an open standard--to communicate with as well as provide backup and recovery services for various appliances. These include the newly certified Procom NetFORCE 3000 NAS device and the Mirapoint Internet Message Server. Page Tagizad, director of product management at Procom, claims that his company's products "provide non-stop data availability, scalability and simplified storage consolidation and management across multiple platforms. By working closely with VERITAS Software, we can better address the needs of enterprise IT managers deploying NAS installations through a combination of our NetFORCE 3000 filer, VERITAS Software's data protection software and NDMP technologies." The NetBackup DataCenter software is designed to provide a high-speed local backup of NAS messaging appliances that doesn't impact the network, VERITAS officials claim. To complement this, the VERITAS NetBackup software protects NAS appliances and messaging servers across heterogeneous platforms and applications. A recent Gartner Dataquest study concluded that VERITAS commands roughly 39 percent of the Networked Backup/Recovery Software market. This market share, calculated for 2000, was up from 13 percent for 1999. According to the study, the company has almost double the share of its nearest competitor. Gartner Dataquest researchers Mark Nicolett and Carolyn DiCenzo, stated in the report, "VERITAS Software has emerged as a leader in the US$5.3 billion storage management market. Leading vendors in this market must have a focus on storage management, a broad install base, deep product functionality... and must be on most customer short lists when storage management tools are being considered."
