Hotmail rolls out 250MB storage capacity in AU

Microsoft has followed through with its long-awaited plan of increasing Hotmail users' storage capacity to 250MB.

Hotmail users were this week pleasantly surprised to find the increase in free e-mail storage limits from 2MB to 250MB finally start to kick in. Microsoft announced its massive expansion plan last June but did not specify when it would become available.

A spokesperson for the Microsoft/Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd (PBL) joint venture in Australia, ninemsn, told ZDNet Australia  that the roll out for the storage upgrade in Australia will be finalised in two weeks. She clarified that there was "no delay" in the roll out for the storage increase since its announcement in June. She added that ninemsn simply prioritised first the upgrade of its anti-virus feature, which was the top service requested by majority of their 4.1 million customers.

The spokesperson added that Hotmail US has started increasing their users' storage capacity a couple of months back but has staggered the roll out.

The storage giant admitted that the move was geared towards competing with Yahoo's increased storage capacity as well as Google's one gigabyte Gmail service.

Ninemsn's Hotmail Plus previously charged customers AU$37.95 a year for a 10MB inbox. The package has been made redundant with the new free offering and is now changed to a 2GB total storage capacity for the same price, with "no graphical advertisements".

And as for the hotmail plus service with no graphical advertisements, well, if you don't need the 2 GB storage and are happy with 250 MB and don't want ads, try something like web washer (webwasher.com), a free for personal use advertisement/popup blocking filter.

I already have 1G FREE from Google and they provide a great search engine which eliminates the clunky folders filing system offered by the also rans!!!!
MSN,...you are playing catchup when you should be leading, considering the size of your organisation.

  3. well that is great, no more full mailbox warnings when I do not access my mailbox for a day. but I am still limited to the number of email I can send in a 24 hour period. I have not checked if the size of permitted attachments is still only 1 mb. this is Anonymous -- 16/10/04

I have not checked if the size of permitted attachments is still only 1 mb. this is getting real frustrating as files, specially those with graphics, or even short demo video info just get bigger. but at least it is a start.

Whilst this is great news, what cost will this be to the public down the track. I can not see a company supplying something for nothing. They say this will be paid for by advertisers, but most browsers (non-microsoft), have the ability to block these adds anyway. So my question still stands who will be paying for it. The higher cost and cost restructuring of software, or will it someday be turned off, creating even more of a hassle for the millions of public users. The internet bandwidth is already being consumed at a great rate, this will only cause a further delay in downloading e-mail and anything else for that matter. The smaller limit was great in my books, at it forced people to actually manage their e-mail, this size increase will just add fuel to the fire of non-management.

  6. The 250mb limit increase is wonderful news. I have been so frustrated with the old limit on many occasions when an unsuspecting person sends me an attachment that takes up all my available space...arghfhf. Lets hope though that this increase is Anonymous -- 21/10/04

Lets hope though that this increase is not a 'get us all in then sock it to em' tactic like banks used with eftpos and electronic banking.

Remember when the cashless pay packets started and it was supposed to be free and cheap for banks and the end consumer? Now look at all the fees and charges we get slugged for online/eftpos banking.

For the time being I will just enjoy my expanded limit and wait to see what happens down the track.

I know that hotmail is a free service, and i cant really complain that much, but hey, if they are giving it to 'everyone' then EVERYONE should get it right?
