National filter protest: 6 March

A national day of protests against the Federal Government's internet filtering project, organised by the group Block the Filter, will now take place on 6 March 2010 instead of late January.

The group's Facebook page explained the reasons behind the move, including "many permits were impossible to get during the holiday season, and a few states lack the volunteers to hold a protest during January". The group is currently calling for more volunteers to help organise proceedings on 6 March, with over 10,000 indicating their plans to attend according to the Facebook page, with a further 9000 "maybe attending".

Another protest, The Great Australian Internet Blackout, will go ahead over the Australia Day long weekend, with online action arranged from 25 to 29 January and offline meetings organised for 26 January.

Together with Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA), the Blackout Team is encouraging online action, asking websites and internet users to turn their profile pictures or web pages black to raise awareness of opposition to the filter.

Other groups have also been vocal about their opposition to the goverment's filter, with EFA yesterday enlisting new campaign manager, Peter Black, for its mandatory internet filtering campaign.

Black is a senior lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, with research focused on the legal issues of media regulation and the internet. He has his own blog, Freedom to Differ and Twitter (@peterblackQUT).

Via Twitter yesterday, Black stated he was "looking forward to the challenge" of his new role as campaign manager, which will add to the EFA's highly vocal opposition to the government's proposed ISP-level filtering, which includes website No Clean Feed.

According to the 2007 Australian Broadband Survey held by Whirlpool, 74.4 per cent of Australian internet users opposed mandatory ISP-level filtering, with only 13.3 per cent of those polled agreeing with the proposed legislation.

Screw Facebook

Some of us don't do Facebook or other social sites, however are more than willing to participate in a protest against filtering. Quite happy to physically turn up in Sydney to show the pollies that there are real people opposed against the idea.

Wrong time of year for this

Whilst I am against most of what this Labor Party-induced filter provides for I object to the demonstration organiser's choice of date for the protest.

Australia Day should be set aside to celebrate what is great about this nation and whilst I realise that a Labor government cannot possibly be a part of that it is still a fact that the Internet filter and all its flaws are not relevant to the occasion.

Wrong time of year..

Are you a fool, it is just this sort of legislation that will destroy " what is great about this nation"

This government, of which I am ashamed to say, I voted for are about to cut the heart out of the freedoms my grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought and in 3 out of 4 cases died for.

So stop your whinging about how your day of getting pi$$ed to celebrate this great country and do something to help KEP this country great.

What does "KEP" mean?

Yeah, and? Your point is? If your post wasn't a littany of abuse and hyperbole then it would be much easier to understand.

ISP Internet filtering

It will not work! Internet filtering is simply an expensive exercise to keep honest people honest. Any geek, or for that matter, any 15 year old, will start using a public DNS server and/or IP addresses instead of URLs. And if the costs are passed on to the ISP customers, the government will be accountable at the next election.

Ip filtering is cheap and easy.

It's actually easy for an ISP to implement filtering by ip address. The governmebt isn't trying to filter individual accounts on social sites. They'll probaby create a master list of domains and block by ip.

John2496John2496 January 9th, 2010
Report offensive content Reply (0) (0)

Very cheap

If they block by IP then a lot of non-harmful websites are going to get blocked, particularly on webhosts where one IP is shared by many websites. It is another reason why CONroy's filter is a disaster.

Time to

The only way to stop it is hope that Labor can be voted out before it is fully rolled out. The problem is that Labor have the knack of signing contracts for dodgey deals right before an election which will hold any future government accountable for honouring their half of the deal. Look at Labor in NSW, they are busting a gut to get a contract signed for this stupid metrol railway that goes nowhere and the duplication of the Iron Cove Bridge. Previously there was the Lane Cove and Cross City Tunnels. No-one wants any of these things and none of these have solved the problems that Labor claimed would be whisked away with the wave of a magic wand.

People vote for these idiots and then expect those who didn't to join with one voice against other potential disasters like this filter.

I don't agree with the filter however I am not that sufficiently against it to warrant bringing myself down to Senator CONroy's level and behaving like a ratbag.

Time to cut the political crap

No one wanted a gst or work choices and no we don't want the filter either.

So enough of the Liberal sponsored crap please.
Every time you comment you make some good points then spoil it all with your blatant political prejudices.

No Labor aren't perfect, far from it. But the sooner you realise the others are no better, in fact they proved to be worse in the constituents eyes, we may finally not have to suffer your inevitable spiels.

This is a place for intelligent IT/ICT comments not political speeches.

So how about sticking to the actual topic at hand and leaving your bitching about the Lane Cove tunnel to your always Liberal loving, Sydney sider mates, as the rest of the country really isn't interested.

Blah

Another flamebait post from Rozelle Hospital's resident ratbag.

When debating, it is prudent to give examples to support claims. That is all I was doing by mentioning a great list of Labor's failures. I never gave any indication that I believed the coalition was perfect as you seem to claim I have. More to the point, I didn't even utter the word 'Liberal'. Big stuffup on your part, very big.

"This is a place for intelligent IT/ICT comments not political speeches."

So naturally you decide to go off-topic by talking about the GST and WorkChoices. I agree, time to cut the political crap and get back to what I was talking about.

Blah, Rozelle Hospital and resident ratbag?

My some people go from reasonably rational, to complete irrational disrespectfulness, very easily don't they? What brought about this little outburst? Rozelle Hospital (shakes head and sighs)?

All I said was stick to the topic and I even agreed with you that Labor aren't perfect. I did then go on to say, that neither are the others.

But you saw red and took offence to me saying the Liberals aren't perfect and went schitzo, which just solidified my assumptions! Are you unable to correspond with anyone who isn't in full agreement with you, rationally and with any decency at all, Mr Sommersberg?

Blah and resident ratbag, please. I would have thought a highbrow Liberal man would have more self control and a little more class? But I forgive you, because not everyone is blessed with the wisdom and patience, that some of us possess.

So again I agree with you, time to cut the political crap. Now let's see who's the first to go back on his word?

Rationality

"But you saw red and took offence to me saying the Liberals aren't perfect and went schitzo, which just solidified my assumptions!"

The only thing that solidifies your assumptions is the iron content in that anvil you use as a brain.

I can accept that you seem accustomed to giving orders to other people, as annoying as it may be, but if you are going to do that at least live by the book of rules you preach to others.

You are guilty of being off-topic by addressing Liberal Party traits. I don't think anyone here believes the Liberal Party is perfect and I certainly didn't utter any words to suggest they are. What is to be remembered is that Labor IS in power at present and that makes a discussion about how government policy affects things like telecommunications relevant to many IT topics.

"So again I agree with you, time to cut the political crap. Now let's see who's the first to go back on his word?"

Looks like you're the bunny. You did it simply by replying to my last comment. You can hardly be in a position to complain about copping some stick if you've just dished it out yourself.

Rationality and grace

"That anvil you use as a brain". How absurdly, hyperbolic, Mr. Sommersberg.

I note too, you trying to hide your inherent, boorishness, by pathetically attempting to turn the tables, by making frivolous accusations.

So again I ask, following this new primitive effort of your's and your former lowbred efforts.

Will you ever be able to conduct yourself with even the slightest correctitude, essential, to those who wish to live in a civilised society?

I find it sad, that people like you actually exist.

Mr Sommersberg, the question was.

"Will you ever be able to conduct yourself with even the slightest correctitude, essential, to those who wish to live in a civilised society"?

But there's no need to answer, because in essence, with your latest small man reply and former replies, you've already answered, without answering.

As expected it's a resounding no, you will not..

Action in the future

Heard some savvy young people talking about making people aware of the internet filter nonsense by flaming some selected sites. Is this what it will take to wake up enemies of free speech? Hilary Clinton's comments on China's internet filter could equally apply here in Australia - we should remember that once a freedom is lost, it's almost impossible to reclaim it.
