Melbourne Uni, Alcatel sign for telco research

in brief Alcatel-Lucent, the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Government have teamed up to create a $10 million research centre for green telecommunications.

The centre, used to study energy efficient networks and technologies, will be called the Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET). The university said that the centre will be staffed by researchers and technology experts. It expected to build a team of 22 during the next three years.

"It will enable the Victorian State to position itself as a place for information and communications technology research and a centre for green communications research, development and training," Victoria's State Treasurer John Lenders said in a statement.

Efficiency research will be conducted on a "broad range" of telecommunications network infrastructure elements. According to the university, efficiency is particularly important as energy usage will skyrocket in line with the exponential growth in the adoption of network technologies.
