Melb council in online mapping project

The City of Melbourne has invited several small focus groups to test a new municipal mapping system that's currently in development.

The new mapping system is designed to display community points of interest like parks and healthcare centres, for example, and has been in the works for the last 18 months according to the council.

The council told ZDNet Australia in a statement today that the online mapping system is designed for new residents moving into an area and people looking to learn about other municipalities.

"The online system has been built for use by a diverse community, including ratepayers, residents, citizens, seniors, young people, small and large business people, tourists, heritage groups etc," the council said in its invitation today.

"One of the things we want to test is how easy the system is to use, even for people with no, or limited, internet experience," it added.

The council told ZDNet Australia that the technical specifications of the system may change based on the outcomes of the tests, and as such the council would not reveal what technology was used in the design of the mapping system.
