Do not take this attack lightly!
The CEO of the company stated on the ABC AM program this morning (27 July 2011) as follows:
DAVID HOOTON: Privacy-wise there's certainly not been any issues at all. This has been basically DNS servers and items which have been not containing customer data at all.
NOTE: He referred to "DNS servers" - these are at the VERY HEART of the NBN and its Internet services and are far more critical than any customer business files, in the general threat to our national information infrastucture sense! An attack on this system is the same as any attack on an earlier telephone exchange that enabled our phone system to work.
The ZDNet piece above then talks about "passwords" - for any DNS critical server - forget password systems - a minimum of two-factor authentication for any access should be / must be a minimum requirement with an appropriate evaluated and tested underlying operating systems that supports such mandatory access control.
It all points again for the need for our governments to look closely at the regulatory environment as the NBN approaches and becomes THE major part of our national information infrastructure. Appropriate levels of security structures and management MUST BE MANDATED BY LAW AND REGULATION simply because there is no evidence anywhere that industry self-regulation will make that happen - it hasn't in the airline industry, pharmaceutical industry, and everywhere else. After all a previous Prime Minister (Rudd) has clearly stated that policy development MUST BE EVIDENCED BASED and, in the case of the ICT industry, the evidence of the need for a strong regulatory emvironment is overwhelming!! Even the United States Congress has started to realise that fact!
