Internode managing director Simon Hackett has announced that the internet service provider (ISP) is going to build a point of presence (PoP) in Darwin to complement its existing infrastructure in the Northern Territory.

The ISP already has some ADSL2+ DSLAMs in Alice Springs and the Darwin area; the DSLAMS in the latter area are currently waiting to be hooked up to NextGen Networks' Regional Blackspots Backhaul Project backhaul. The new PoP will mean that data that flows from Internode's Darwin infrastructure will be locally terminated into a router there, Hackett said, ensuring that local data access between customers on the Darwin DSLAM infrastructure will remain local.

The company will also be able to complete a gigabit rate data ring linking Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs, before connecting back to the core network in Brisbane. This would mean that Darwin connectivity would have no single point of failure, according to Hackett, with data flow able to be achieved via Adelaide or Brisbane.

Hackett said that the company will also be building an Extreme SHDSL deployment in the main Darwin exchange, to provide a 40Mbps/40Mbps symmetric link for businesses.

He expected the construction to be finished in the first quarter of next year.
