CIO View: Virtualisation is a technology with very real returns

It seems going virtual can create some very real returns. Not only does virtualisation cut down on wasted CPU, disk and memory capacity, it also allows for more rapid deployment of applications and reduces power usage.

Cesare Tizi, ZDNet Australia's CIO of the year is a big fan of virtualisation: "with virtualisation, management is a lot easier... I don't actually miss the days of stacks and stacks of servers sitting on shelves."

As former CIO of AGL Energy, Tizi closely monitors power usage, "coming from the energy industry, I'm very conscious of greenhouse gases and sustainable models for energy consumption."

Tizi said he is aware the datacentres are massive users of power, and so he is always on the lookout for ways to reduce energy consumption.
