What's on your Christmas wishlist?

OPINION: The Christmas decorations are up around the office, and the flashing fairy lights are almost sending you over the edge. But, if the sky was the limit, what would be on your tech Christmas list?

Everyone's talking about the presents that they want from their friends and family, but what kit do you dream about being able to install where you work?

Generally the approaching end of a calendar year brings reflection on how projects and goals have progressed. It is also a time for planning the coming year, and drawing up a list of what you are hoping to achieve.

Sometimes the end of the year is a good time to look at the bigger picture. Often as staff are winding down there is more time and headspace to meet with team members to gauge their perspective on the IT department's goals.

The benefit of doing this type of assessment at the end of the year, rather than as part of a budget planning process, is that it allows you the space to think about what you're really trying to achieve within the business. There is always time later to drill down into whether it's financially viable, and to set budgetary limits.

I'm not suggesting that IT professionals lose the plot completely and enter tech fantasy land. But if you take the time to look at areas of the enterprise you would really like to streamline, upgrade or rebuild, it gives you a starting point for more detailed planning.

It can be easy to get lost in the day-to-day management tasks, user complaints and staff management issues. Perhaps this month is the time to take a breath and reassess what it is that you really want to achieve.
