Management: IT departments in crisis?

Difficult team members, excessive workloads and project overload--Australia's IT professionals are grappling with how to cope with doing more tasks, in less time with shrinking resources.

Among the top concerns of the IT professionals who responded to a recent IT Manager channel poll were difficult team members and excessive workloads. Dealing with budgetary issues and project overload were also cited as being among the biggest management concerns facing the respondent's IT departments at the moment.

As one respondent pointed out, there is no magic bullet or one clear answer to being a good manager. "Dealing with human beings--be it in IT or other areas--will always be complex and challenging," he said. "The satisfaction is seeing how their success is measured alongside mine."

Similarly, one systems administrator highlighted the importance of developing a trust within the team, as well as between team members and the manager. "This, in effect, flourishes an openness and honest atmosphere where individuals can comfortably express their opinion and beliefs," said the respondent.

While dealing with staff and managerial concerns have always been something CIOs have had to deal with, recent reports have highlighted the impact of corporate misdeeds in workplaces.

Likewise, other issues such as managing friends and improving client management skills have been on IT manager's radar in recent months.
