Just before Macworld, Apple has unveiled a Mac Pro with eight processor cores and a new system architecture. Apple said its two 45-nanometer Intel Quad-Core Xeon processors running at up to 3.2GHz will double the power of its predecessor.

The new Mac has a 1600MHz frontside bus (FSB) and accommodates up to 32GB of 800MHz memory. It comes with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card with 256MB of video memory. The standard 8-core Mac Pro will cost AU$3,999 (inc. VAT).

The new Mac Pro has four internal hard drive bays that can each hold a 1TB Serial ATA hard drive for up to 4TB of internal storage.

The Mac Pro comes with a new PCI Express 2.0 graphics slot that can hold the latest video cards from ATI or Nvidia. It can drive up to eight 30in. displays.

Apple says it has doubled the power of its Xserve server by boosting its memory bandwith with a 1600MHz system bus and 800MHz memory. It also boasts 8-core processing power with Intel Xeon 'Harpertown' 5400 chips, 3TB of internal storage and 32GB of 800MHz memory.

The standard Xserve will cost AU$4,499 (inc. VAT).
