Photos: Intel unveils future technology at IDF 2007 By Angus Kidman, ZDNet Australia September 19, 2007 URL: http://www.zdnet.com.au/insight/hardware/soa/Photos-Intel-unveils-future-technology-at-IDF-2007/0,139023759,339282217,00.htm
Intel's big picture announcements at its 2007 Developer Forum in San Francisco centred around the availability of its Penryn processors later this year and future plans for its Nehalem microarchitecture, but CEO Paul Otellini also used the opening keynote to show off some cool new prototypes and other fancy equipment. ![]()
Intel's Montevina chipset for notebook PCs (the successor to Santa Rosa) is due for release in the middle of 2008. Otellini showed off a demonstration system housing one of the first functional Montevina prototypes, which he described as possibly the ugliest laptop ever. What's so wrong with Perspex? Personally, we think the handwritten label is a nice touch. Credit: Angus Kidman/ZDNet Australia ![]()
During the keynote, Charles Wirth of XtremeSystems.org broke a series of gaming performance benchmark records on a specially constructed multi-core machine. The secret sauce? This ugly but functional cascade cooling system, which Wirth said dropped the PC to an icy 160 below zero. As Otellini noted, don't try this at home. Credit: Angus Kidman/ZDNet Australia ![]()
For datacentre managers concerned about escalating power bills, Intel showed off the "EcoRack", designed to run with much greater power efficiency. Not available in other colours, apparently. Credit: Angus Kidman/ZDNet Australia
