iPhone vs Nokia

Will Apple's iPhone reshape the mobile phone market? Are there better devices actually available already? We put the iPhone head-to-head with its competition to see how it stacks up.

Gadget aficionados will no doubt have heard that Apple is launching the iPhone, its first mobile phone, in the US on 29 June. Here in Australia, though, we'll have to wait until next year to get our grubby mitts on the sleek multimedia device. Apple recently published information comparing its hot little handset with the already available Nokia N95, Samsung BlackJack, Palm Treo 750 and the Blackberry Curve 8300 (this last one hasn't been released locally yet).

Apple also recently upped the stated battery life of the iPhone from five to eight hours of talk time, 250 hours of standby, five hours of Internet browsing, seven hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback -- 10 hours longer than Apple's hard-disk based iPods.

But why is the iPhone generating so much hype? It's just a phone after all, isn't it? While it does have an elegant design and attractive interface, what could be in this device that's revolutionary? We compare it side-by-side with the N95, the top-of-the line handset from the world's No. 1 phone maker, at the moment, Nokia. We've also colour coded our table to indicate in green which device's feature, in our opinion, comes out on top.

    3g Anonymous -- 29/06/07

what's the point of not having the iphone when its not 3g compatible. you have to plug this device in to your pc to sync music, afaik you cant download directly using wifi, and with no 3g, online downloads are slow.

with microSD the nokia can go up to 2gb, and im guessing soon 4/8gb.

    im still out

    N95 Anonymous -- 05/09/07 (in reply to #320081857)

The N95 is about to be replaced by an 8GB version. When the iPhone is finally released in Australia... the soon to be released N95 8GB would probably be superseeded by a newer, better model. So NO, there is no comparison.

BTW Jeremy, the N95 DOES have a light sensor next to the 3G camera.

    N95 too Anonymous -- 05/03/08 (in reply to #320085646)

and it also DOES have an accelerometer in it to stabilize the camera and to aid the GPS.

Some guy posted a video on youtube, playing with an app (that he could install in the S60 OS) where he would tilt the phone and the red ball would roll whichever way he tilted it, and it also measured upwards movement because he'd kinda fling the phone upwards horizontally and the ball would hit the screen. I personally think the iphone is junk, and boring, also while I write this the 8GB n95 is already released, along with an upcoming n96 with 16GB memory and expandable MicroSD slot (MicroSD cards are now available in 8-12GB

    Price Anonymous -- 29/06/07

Listing the price as $499US is just plain wrong. To get it, you must sign up for a data plan for 24 months! - I'm sure if one looked they could find the nokia for $0*!

    listed price of n95 Anonymous -- 30/06/07

uhhhhh, at $34 per month extra on a Three $29 plan over 24 months the total cost of the n95 comes to:

    24 * 34 = $816

I don't know here you pulled that other number from. Even if you buy it outright from three it is $1099 outright. I doubt the iPhone will be much cheaper.

    Ambient Light Anonymous -- 02/07/07

Just to let you know the N95 does have an ambient light sensor

    Memory Anonymous -- 02/07/07

I can download four movies onto a 4Gb miniSD card and watch them on my Nokia (and that's only an E61) without problem. And I can have as many of these cards as I like, which means unlimited memory.

Plus the customisation offered by 3rd party apps is excellent. Try Opera Mini, for example, it knocks socks of Safari, especially if you pay by the Mb. Or perhaps a WiFi radar application, or a golf score card app.?

ITunes? Who needs it? Most of my friends with iPods are always complaining about the problems with DRM and so on. I just download or rip what I want and copy it over to a card or directly to the phone (via bluetooth or cable).

While Americans may be fawning over this (and let's face it, they fawn over Apple like there's no tomorrow), Europe and beyond will not tolerate a single provider (isn't that called a monopoly?), so Apple will have to sort that out for a start.

I love gadgets, but I don't like the Apple model, it's too restrictive. The majority of people that buy these are probably the same people that will buy "iPhone for Dummies".

Having said that, I haven't bothered with an N95 either, but if I wanted to upgrade, I would pick that over the iPhoney.

    re:US Anonymous -- 04/07/07 (in reply to #320082015)

Nobody is really ecxited about the iphone. It looks good, eye candy. It has good features for the kids to show off. I played with it for about 5 minnutes-- it crashed about 2 times. The iThing is just a basic phone with several cool features. It is worth waiting for the next generation with 3g, speed dial, file management, microSD slot, GPS, 3rd party progs, BT with file transfer, GOOD CAM, video cam, flash, multiple languages(esp if the keys are on display not actual buttons).

But does it make good coffee? Anonymous -- 03/07/07

Does anyone still make just a plain, simple mobile phone?
These 'jack of all trades, master of none' gadgets leave me cold!

Nokia upgrades already in the pipeline Anonymous -- 10/07/07

Nokia has already released two ROM upgrades which amongst other things improve the battery life. A new high capacity battery is on its way and a Nokia N95 8GB version is in the pipeline.

Is the author of the article reading these comments, because a there are a lot of mistakes and omissions in the table?

    Hardware:
The N95 has two cameras, high-res and lo-res, rather than one.
The N95 main camera has a flash.
(as already stated) The N95 does have a light sensor (next to the front video camera)
The N95 has stereo wide speakers.
The N95 has an IR port.
The N95 has a built in FM radio, including Visual Radio with participating stations.
The N95 uses a two way slide instead of an accelerometer to choose orientation. This means despite the way you hold it, the orientation stays the way you choose.
The N95 can be used as P2P media controller for your home music network.
The N95 can be used as hands free car phone with the included accessories in conjunction with your car stereo (needs some form of connection - e.g. input jack, bluetooth, FM adapter or cassette adapter).
The N95 has a tiny AC power adapter as standard. Don't have to find a USB device to charge it or buy an optional adapter.
The N95 doesn't have a proximity sensor because it doesn't need one.

    Software:
The N95 has bar code reader for 2D bar codes.
The N95 includes office applications and Acrobat.
The N95 does have spell check, of sorts.
As far I can see, the N95 music player is not RealPlayer (RealPlayer is used for videos and movies), but Nokia's own player which is similar to the iPod menus.
The N95 can be used as a field and track monitor, for tracking times, laps and energy using the GPS and included software.
N95 also integrates with Vox as well as Flickr
N95 includes LifeBlog a kind multimedia diary(timeline view of all multimedia , calls, messages, emails etc that can synced to your computer).

I'm sure that there are others that I have forgotten. The list just goes on and on.

Having said all that, I still think the iPhone is an incredibly sexy device. The interface is a true revolution and I will be looking at it closely when it finally gets released here in Oz.

    next G version Anonymous -- 19/07/07

I'm waiting for the Next G version of the N95 to be released later this year, as 3g doesn't give as much coverage where I live.

Loose Slide Fix Anonymous -- 08/09/07 (in reply to #320085257)

The loose slide is an easy fix http://www.simplysymbian.com/2007/05/02/how-to-repair-wobbly-slider-nokia-n95/ I have the newer batch... slide is still a little loose. Wasn't really bothering me till I read reports of owners whinging about it and drove me nuts. I did the fix like on the link above... it's nice and SOLID now. There are a few methods... but that one was the best cause you don't have to take out the plastic rails and the moving parts are not touching the tape, so it would last for the life of the phone! :)

    GO NOKIA!!! Karim H -- 19/09/07

ok, im my opinion, NOKIA rocks and the new nokia N95 8GB edition is gonna kick iPhones butt lol. Plus, Nokia has been in the industry for about 15-20 years now whereas apple is new and the n95 has better sound quality, image quality (5MP) Video Calling (on 3G Networks) and supports 3G. Plus, N95 has an integrated GPS transponder, it also light in weight. I can go on forever lol. so yeah Nokia N95 is muchhhhhhhh better

    Practicality Anonymous -- 09/11/07

The iPhone looks great and flash with cool stuff in it but by the time we even get it in Australia it will be old and outdated because the N95 will be even faster, better, and have even more memory. iTunes is very good for music and is easy to use which makes the iPhone better, its mostly just like a iPod that you can call with and take crap, low quality photos with. The n95 8gb will probably be out before the i phone and that is basically the same and better, probably more reliable. Touch screens are really anoying as well even though they are good for some things like looking at music, they are really anoying for typing in phone numbers and writing sms because you have to use the stupid pen and press everything. I love the iPhone and think its great but its just not going to be good enough when it comes out. The nokia phones or samsung will just be too ahead

battery life not £10+ problem + lots more S60 3rd :S you big review noobs!!! Alex Coleman -- 10/02/08 (in reply to #320089451)

My nokia is SO so SO loud!! I turned up the equalizer and the speakers sound Immense with stereo Widening turned on And the loudness function (NOT the EQ) turned ON(this ((i read)) has been disabled for N95 8GB boo hu health and safety)... xD THE 3.5(not screen lol2.6) OUT IS Grate to.

    Nokia N95 Anonymous -- 19/11/07

It actually does have an acellerometer as well, used for stabilisation of video recording, however 3rd party apps are available to include screen tilting functionality on rotation of phone as well.

    n95-i simply the best Anonymous -- 05/05/08

i got the n95-i on telstra next g (3.5g) network this phone kicks **** It takes only 15 sec to download a 5mb song and can load a web page nearly as quick as my broadband pc .. Using 3rd party applications like opera mini is handy for keeping the data bills down ... The n95-i also has expandable memory up to 10 gb .. How can the i-phone even come close to this when it is only 2.5g ... Hahaha would be like comparing the n95 to a old green screen nokia ... Im actually using my phone to post this comment as its quicker than my laptop
