Huawei has announced that it will create an Australian Board of Directors that will meet for the first time by mid-year.

According to the company, the board will be composed of three "prominent Australian leaders" to sit alongside members of Huawei's executive team from Australia, the regional branch and the company's global headquarters in Shenzhen China.

Huawei said that Egon Zehnder had been enlisted to find the right candidates. A shortlist of Australians is already being evaluated, according to Huawei, with the final board to be announced in six to eight weeks.

"This announcement is a landmark event for Huawei on a global level, being the first time that the company has established a localised Board of Directors anywhere in the world," Huawei Australia government and public affairs Director Jeremy Mitchell said in a statement.

He said that Australia was becoming increasingly important in the company's global operations. Huawei currently employs 400 staff in Australia; that number is expected to increase to over 600 by the year's end, according to Mitchell.

"With such strong ties to the Australian market, it was only natural that the company would enlist a number of high-profile Australians to help steer the company's local direction," he said.

Huawei Australia reported revenues of $171 Million for 2010, a 29 per cent increase on 2009 revenues.
