Ex-Optus exec Fletcher backs Telstra

Former Optus executive and current Liberal MP Paul Fletcher has thrown his hat back in the telecommunications ring in a high-profile interview with radio shockjock Alan Jones, going some way to backing his former opponent Telstra against proposed government intervention.

Fletcher was late last year elected as the Federal Liberal member for the NSW seat of Bradfield, a tenure that Jones described as having been a "novice" politician for "five minutes". Previously he was the director of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs for Optus, where he had a high-profile role criticising Telstra.

Since his election, Fletcher has been relatively absent from the contentious telecommunications portfolio, which is held on the Opposition side by MP Tony Smith, despite his expertise on the subject.

In the interview, Fletcher repeated the Opposition line that the government was not paying any attention to protecting the interests of Telstra shareholders in its proposed legislation to break the telco into wholesale and retail divisions.

He said the telecommunications reform legislation proposed by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy — currently deadlocked in the Senate — was an attempt to split up Telstra to try and make the $43 billion National Broadband Plan "less uneconomic than it already is".

Fletcher further defended Telstra against the government proposal that it might be blocked from buying further mobile radio spectrum. "This mobile spectrum is vital to the future of Telstra, because it's for the next generation of mobile telephony. They need to be allowed to bid for it, and the govt is threatening that they be barred," he said.

The entire interview is available online at the website of Jones' station 2GB (MP3).

Before his time at Optus, Fletcher also worked as a telecommunications advisor and chief of staff to former Communications Minister Richard Alston.

He is also the author of Wired Brown Land? Telstra's Battle for Broadband, a book which examines the history of struggle for the broadband market in Australia.

Talkback

Suzanne thanks for the story on the Alan Jones exposure of the shaky NBN Co business structure. You are correct that it is a fact that Paul Fletcher has vast knowledge of Telecommunications in Australia, in fact I obtained a copy of his book you referred to and it is very interesting. Surely Mr Abbott will will seek to take advantage of Mr Fletcher's experience in Comms and install him in the Shadow Portfolio. People have been calling for Mr Rudd to replace Senator Conroy with Senator Lundy for ages and it hasn't happened but perhaps Mr Abbott will act faster.

Hi Sydney,

Actually it was Renai's article. I really thought Wired Brown Land was interesting. I'm glad you've now had a read.

Gee Syd – fancy ultra conservative radio announcer Alan Jones and Paul Fletcher - who used to be Optus’ regulatory chief, and surely, would previously have been advocating the completely opposite views, to those he now advocates - (a relation of yours perhaps?) both bagging the Labor government's NBN!

Who would ever have thunk (yes thunk) it… A Liberal old boy and a Liberal new boy supporting the Liberal party’s position! Unheard of…lol.

And of course the inevitable Syd, flip-flop... all this just happens to fit into your TLS portfolio driven position too… just as you and Labor old boy Rudd did, before the last election!

Back then you were bagging the Liberal/Nationals, for gifting money[sic] to Singapore's Optus (and subsequently also inadvertently bagging, Mr. Fletcher) and advocating a Labor government – yawn…

Sydney. Ignore the yawn, the matter has been brought to Tony's attention.

Dear Leader of the Opposition, The Hon.Tony Abbott.

With the very unfortunate departure of Senator Minchin from the very important Telecommunications role It's an opportune time for cabinet to consider the member for Bradfield to take up the role ASAP.

The following report is a testament to his credentials in Telecommunications and you can follow his action, Courtesy ZDNET.com.au below:

Vasso I have this hour finished reading Paul Fletcher's book as referred to by Suzanne and while it was honest and critical his overriding theme was that there must be competition in any new broadband network. That seems to rule out Mr Rudd's NBN Co monopoly.

Yeah you'd much prefer the current monopoly, which you just happen to have a large investment in, disgraceful...

Suzanne thank you for putting me on the right track and sincere apologies to Renai who was, of course, the author of the Alan Jones/Paul Fletcher story.

What an intriguing commentary from Paul Fletcher, accompanied by such strong interjections of indignation from shock jock Alan Jones (Cash for Comment - Telstra being one) that I'm surprised Fletcher managed to get a work in edgeways. Unfortunately all Fletcher has done is demonstrate that his principles are groundless, being swayed by whatever employer or personal motivation suits his purpose. In doing so it has effectively destroyed any credibility he may have had. Some cynics might say 'The perfect politician'.

After reading Paul Fletcher's descriptive book I was fortified by his display of balanced honesty. While being a severe critic of Telstra, he expressed credit of Telstra where due in a very open manner. Your libelous remarks against Alan Jones were probably made in the certainty of your anonymity.

For myself I did not, nor do now, seek "5 secs of fame" as my long service to my Country and being a good and faithful servant of my fellow Australians is comfort enough for me. I would ask you Anon to consider your Country and the 34,000 fellow Australians whose families may suffer if Telstra is, as you hope, destroyed.

SL Interesting that you didn't consider Renai LeMay's description of Jones as a 'shock jock' libelous but mine is? And if it is libelous then half the media in Aust would be guilty of the same offence.
You also presume to much by claiming I wish to see the destruction of Telstra.
But no matter. I'll sleep easier knowing you are hard at work looking after the welfare of this Country and your fellow Australians (of which I presume I am one). Well done good sir, and I'll look for your name in the next honours list.
