NSW Police raised the alarm after it received reports the ATMs were spitting out money.

"People should realise that even though an ATM has dispensed cash, they are not entitled to that money and are committing a criminal offence if they keep it," state fraud squad commander detective superintendent Col Dyson said.

"They should also realise that ATM locations are covered extensively by surveillance."

A database maintenance glitch had this morning created issues with the bank's ATM, EFTPOS and online NetBank services, along with point of sale, funds transfers, BPAY and scheduled payments for some customers.

NSW Police would not confirm if this morning's maintenance outage had caused the ATMs to disgorge cash, saying only that it is liaising with the bank.

The Commonwealth Bank had not responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.
