Canberra leading Australian net usage
The Australian Capital Territory continues to lead the nation as the home for the biggest users of the internet, according to a release yesterday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The number of households in the ACT with home internet access more than tripled from 27 per cent in 1998 to 82 per cent in 2008/09, the ABS said.

ACT household access to computers stood at 88 per cent at the end of 2008/2009.
Comparatively, Western Australia came in second at 81 per cent, followed by the Northern Territory and Queensland on 80 per cent. Victoria and New South Wales scored 78 and 77 per cent respectively, with South Australia on 75 per cent and Tasmania coming in last at 71 per cent.
Nearly all — 92 per cent — of internet-connected ACT households used broadband, with an estimated 6 per cent using dial-up.
Tasmania and South Australia recorded the lowest proportion of households with broadband internet — 49 and 54 per cent respectively. WA, Queensland and NT all showed similar percentages in the low 70's, with Victoria, NSW and South Australia sitting around the 60's.
For dial-up, the Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria and NSW all showed around 8 per cent of households using the slower internet service, with WA, SA and Tasmania sitting on 10, 12 and 13 per cent respectively.
