Apple resellers cast doubts on iPhone release

The founder of Apple community site MacTalk has either uncovered the biggest Australian tech news story of the year. Or he's one mischievous bugger.

Apple fans around the nation suffered coronaries this morning after a post on an Apple community Web site claimed Apple resellers have been given Australian release dates for the much-hyped iPhone.

The post suggests that Apple resellers have informally been told that they will be able to sell the iPhone in late June, with access to multiple carriers and no lock-in contracts.

But seven large Apple resellers in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra contacted by ZDNet.com.au, said they have heard nothing from Apple about an Australian release.

David McMahon, CEO of Fone Zone, parent company of massive Apple reseller network Next Byte, says he is still in the dark. "Others may well have been told something but I've heard nothing," he said.

"These things are kept very secret," said a sales manager at a Mac1 store. "We never get told anything. The first thing we do in the morning is check the Apple Web site to make sure nothing new has been released".

"Absolutely not," said another in Melbourne, who said that new Apple products tend to arrive wrapped in black plastic to stop information leaks. "We haven't been told a thing."

"Haven't heard anything at all," said another in Sydney. "You will let us know if you hear anything, yeah?"

The author of the post, a former employee of Apple reseller Computers Now, said that only a handful of sales managers from key Apple partners have been told informally of the plans.

He said that four different store owners had been given four different release dates, close together in mid to late June, so that Apple would know who released the information should it be made public.

ZDNet.com.au contacted all four resellers, none of which revealed any information.

Either Apple is bizarrely selective in who it's sharing its product release information with, or somebody is stirring the pot...

What do you think?

Resellers Wouldn't Tell You Anyways Anthony Agius -- 09/04/08

Anyone who does know, wouldn't be able to tell you if what I've said is true as they've been told not to tell anyone by Apple, or else they'll get in trouble. The sources are my friends and probably under NDAs - to have their name on record (in order for you to "confirm" it) would be more trouble than it's worth. Of course they'll say "I know nothing".

Of course the resellers didn't talk Anonymous -- 09/04/08

So you called them and said (effectively): "Hi, Jude Willis from ZD Net, would you like to give up some information under NDA so Apple can shut down your store or revoke your Apple Reseller status?"

Are you really surprised with the answer you got?

Everything points to this being the true release date and plans for the iPhone release in Aus. See you in line at the end of June.

i won't be queueing in line for one of these donkey devices.

and if you think apple tells resellers its secrets, you're an idiot. i've worked at an apple reseller and we were the last people to know what was on their minds.

No Lock in contracts? Anonymous -- 10/04/08

Hmmmm, what makes me suspicious is that according to this article and the related post we would have:

    -no lock in contract

    -more then one carrier

Would that be a world first?

No Lock in contracts? Anonymous -- 10/04/08 (in reply to #320099452)

No it wouldn't be a world first. Im not sure if it was china or some where but, because of the laws they are not allowed to do things like that here.

No Lock in contracts? Anonymous -- 11/04/08 (in reply to #320099475)

Fair Enough. I'm happy to be corrected.

not china ernie -- 14/04/08 (in reply to #320099504)

germany. legally they couldn't do a lock-in, but what apple did was to make it very very expensive to buy the device unless you went with their appointed carrier

    no carrier for china yet

Apple wouldnt tell anyone even the resellers.. that Apple employee would lose their job.. but you never know who knows what..and..unlocked is possibility as apparently the ACCC isnt really too happy about having one carrier for the device.. have heard a few other interesting stories as well..

    with 3G Anonymous -- 11/04/08

If the release is in June, will it be with 3G handsets?

Apple iPhone Australian release date Anonymous -- 18/04/08

I can't wait until the Apple iPhone comes out in Australia because I really want one and will buy one on any network it's on.

Interestingly I came across the Vodaphone press release yesterday arvo and was quite interested.

Did a search and one thing I did find was this

On Apple Australia web site yesterday afternoon one of the pages had an Iphone image. Roll the mouse over it and it did say iphone - not ipod.

There was no link when you clicked the image and that image I cannot find for love or money today

Obviously got it just as someone was testing a page? :)

What it does say is that Apple Oz is getting ready to put it up on their web sites. So my guess is Early June, Early july or co-incide with the Sydney Apple Store opening
