Who'll be on the Vista at midnight?

Posted by Ella Morton @ 10:57 59 comments

Alright, hands up all who are going to the midnight launch of Windows Vista.

For those unaware, 44 Harvey Norman stores in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne will be flinging open their doors at 11pm on Monday night to usher in the hordes of Microsoft devotees who can't wait another second for the latest operating system.

Various deals have been thrown in to entice punters to make the pilgrimage, including 10 percent discounts on computer hardware and a bonus Web cam for the first 100 customers.

But the main drawcard is at the Alexandria, Sydney store, where, at one minute to midnight, the first official copy of Vista Ultimate -- autographed, rock star-style, by Bill Gates -- will be sold by Harvey Norman Chairman Gerry Harvey and new Microsoft Australia Managing Director Tracey Fellows.

As a concept, the midnight launch is pretty neat. You get to share in the fervent anticipation of a product with like-minded souls, swapping embellished tales and forging a sort of techie simpatico as you wait in an ever-growing queue outside a shutter-bound store.

I went to the midnight launch of the original Xbox some years ago. (Not due to any fanaticism over gaming consoles, but in deference to my gamer compadres.) Though I didn't share the barely contained passion of the attendees, I can see how the combination of doof-doof tunes, promotional giveaways and teenage testosterone would make for a memorable night.

ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas this month, Bill Gates introduced Vista with the words "The wow starts now". It seems that the target audience for the new OS is not so much enterprise-focused folk (who already have access to Vista, anyway), but young and funky consumers. I hope this is reflected in the attendees at Monday night's launch. I would love to see a queue sprinkled with people dressed as the paperclip from Microsoft Word, maybe a couple carrying giant windows, and a cowboy with a permanent Clint Eastwood expression as he surveys the limitless "vista". It'd be swell if someone walked along the line handing out Aero chocolate bars, in homage to the new dynamic graphics engine. After all the angst of delayed releases, criticism and cries of Vista being a second-rate OS X, surely the launch of the system is a time for a bit of light-hearted fun?

Are you planning to go to the midnight launch of Vista? Taking a camera along to capture the magic? We'd love to hear your plans and see those photos -- talkback below or e-mail ella.morton@zdnet.com.au

Think i will spent that time instead installing Fedora 6 on my PC.

They can Fix there bugs for the first 2 years then i might think about it.

Unless major game developers start porting for linux then windows totaly gets the boot, from our 6 PC home

Yeah I agree Anonymous -- 24/01/07 (in reply to #320073504)

I use Mac, but I think Vista is overated hype and I think that you must be a complete idiot to go to a store and lay down your $1000 bucks for a shitty operating system filled with flaws and bugs. Not to mention ongoing virus problems..

Vista at midnight Anonymous -- 23/01/07

As a Vista is something one sees in natural light I
cannot imagine trying to do that by artificial light.
By the way in the cold light of day OS X rocks and
that from an old time Windows user who can still
remember DOS. By the way DOS is proof that
Bill can deliver a programme that does not crash.
Pity about the user interface though.

God no. Moved to Apple, no going back Anonymous -- 23/01/07

I occassionally read a PC mag with their breathless anticipation of Vista (or whatever their advertisers seem to be pitching), then flick some pages to endless copy about patches, drivers, work-arounds, and so on. Urgh I used to have to bother with all that nonsense too. Not saying Apples don't deal in similar because they can, but for me it's all been turn it on, and it goes. No BS, no re-boots and try again, it just works.

    OS Fanaticism? Anonymous -- 23/01/07

Even though I personally can't justify camping out for days in front of a store just to be one of the first people to buy a new video game console, I can understand why some people would do that. When you finally buy that new console at midnight, you can take your brand new Wii/XBOX360/PS3 home and play your heart out until the next morning.

What I don't understand is who would be so fanatic about an operating system? I can just imagine taking my brand-new copy of Vista home and installing it (fun!), migrating my profiles to the new OS (more fun!), and let's not forget making sure all of my legacy hardware and software works correctly on the new system (woo hoo!).

Seriously, though, operating systems seem boring, and they should be transparent to the user. Operating systems should be like a paved road, not exactly fun nor attention-grabbing, but you'd definitely notice when it's not there.

Operating system fun Anonymous -- 23/01/07 (in reply to #320073509)

I can understand that the OS should just "work" and be transparent to the user. And Microsoft operating systems make that point loud and clear; they hang and bomb so often that the user truly wishes the OS "could" operate transparently beneath the user layer.
Linux and Unix have allowed me to enjoy the OS because of the freedom they bring. I can just "use it" to get something done...or, I can tweek it, crawl around, play with it, program it. That's the fun for me! Vista is not worth waiting in line for on any account, because some really cool open source stuff exists already for Linux, and is free-of-charge. And if you want to get excited or jazzed by an operating system, get KNOPPIX LINUX. It's runs live from a CD, and has a lot of cool tools, and includes server software, secure connect (SSH), games, etc. You can leave your laptop at home, and just carry a bootable CD around. Keep your data on a USB memory stick or external hard drive. NO MORE LAPTOP! Wherever there is en existing computer, you have your own private, working system. Stuff like this makes it fun, interesting, "KOOL" to use computers. And this is the very thing Microsoft has been careful to avoid, and they have stagnated and controlled the technology
to maintain a grip on every aspect of the "system", to control their profit.

Try KNOPPIX! You can't hurt it-- it's on a CD!!! You CAN
play with it...Hey! You may actually start to enjoy computing! (and it's FREE)

    Vista - it's a flop Anonymous -- 23/01/07

No way! I want an operating system that works, like Mepis or Kubuntu.

The gap between Windows is just getting wider. Who wants to have to dedicate an 80gig drive to a sluggish juganaught that no-one can control. Good advice to the tempted - wait a couple of years. In the meantime use Mepis, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mandriva.

I gave a copy (provided free by UBUNTU) to my friend & he HAS installed it. He couldn't wait. He is totally fed up with the M$ O/S.

Why would anyone want to put up with all the added DRM overhead Vista has added?
A dual core PC will be needed to keep up with all the protection and checking it does.

Fuzzy output to my display or TV if it thinks I might be using an illegal copy of a DVD! even thought the law allows me to make a copy for backup!

    Some recommendation for Linux Fanboys:
Shave, shower and get your hair cut (you smell).
Stop eating Dorritos (you're way too fat).
Improve your social skills by talking to someone in person (not about Linux or M$ Windoze).
Get a job (probably requires experience with Windows and social skills. Could be a challenge.).

Harvey Norman has a bit of junk mail floating around (got it yesterday in Christchurch) that microslop must have paid for because its choca full of vista self-promotion, bit of a laugh as I have been doing all that stuff for years using various linux's..

I have been using Fedora (currently 6) on my desktop and server for ages.. no microslop stuff here..

Personally signed by Bill Gates!? Dan Warne -- 23/01/07

Microsoft has produced 20,000 copies of these 'signed by Bill Gates' editions of Vista. Call me a cynic, but I simply do not believe that the richest man in the world would bother sitting there and signing 20,000 boxes just for the sake of charging $US10 more per copy. Either they've used a stenography machine, or they've printed the signature onto the box. Furthermore, someone like Bill Gates wouldn't stand for the ludicrous repetition of signing something over and over again thousands of times when almost exactly the same result could be achieved by scanning the signature and printing it on the box. So what are the mug punters really rushing in to Harvey Norman to get? A standard copy of Vista with very slightly graphically doctored packaging?

Dead Right Anonymous -- 24/01/07 (in reply to #320073542)

And because the packaging is designed by Microsoft it will look overloaded and crappy anyhow. What gets me is that the heart of this article is the fact that people will actually camp out and wait for the store to open to buy an overpriced and undersupported operating system. Vista has less support than when they launched XP. Wait a while for this one to flourish and for the hardware to get up to scratch.

You are out by 19993 copies Anonymous -- 30/01/07 (in reply to #320073542)

I WAS WRONG!!! Dan Warne -- 30/01/07 (in reply to #320073844)

Microsoft's Public Relations Manager rang me personally to let me know that yes, indeed, the box was personally signed by Bill Gates. Hmm... O/S's rock your boat eh? Anonymous -- 24/01/07

Why do people get so excited about the Operating System?

Linux = Complicated and very little mainstream apps supported (for my industry anyway)

Windows = Complicated, sometimes unstable and lots of mainstream apps supported.

I love the speed of Ubuntu especially on older hardware - unfortunately once I've installed it I don't know what to do with it other than browse the net! The learning curve is pretty darn steep if you've only ever used Windows. Then you've got specialty apps that just don't exist in the FOS world.

No no no no..... Anonymous -- 24/01/07 (in reply to #320073591)

Linux = amazingly easy and scalable.
Windows = virus ridden, time consuming and crash-happy.

What's the point of having all the niche applications if you're spending all your time nursing your Windows servers from one lurching crash to the next and all your desktops have been pwned by your friendly Nigerian phishing scammers?

    Here endeth the lesson.

Stop hiding behind a computer screen!

If you got something to say, then rethink it first before posting. You're not helping your cause.

I have tried VISTA and MAC OS and LINUX and XP.

    1) In order of usability for a Granny or a Kid or a Mum/Dad:

    MAC OS, XP, VISTA, LINUX.

(I prefer XP over MAC because of a larger support for it in terms of business operations, jobs, schools, hardware, software, etc... It's the work of Steve Jobs that is holding back Apple from overtaking MS.)

    2) In order of installation and just getting it to work:

    MAC OS, VISTA, XP, LINUX.

Linux (in general) just seems quite confusing from the beginning. ie. choose a distribution, then choose a desktop environment (KDE is at top), then from the MAJORITY of Users .... What the hell is IDE0 IDE1 ???

*** I know what they are! I'm an sysadmin, programmer (Java and .Net), and db admin (oracle, SQL server). ***

    3) In order of jobs and business use:

Any MS OS experience are definitely a pre-requisite for getting a job. Maybe there is a small group of top executives that use Linux (who knows?).

MAC OS seems great with the entertainment, publishing and media .... as for business, well Steve Jobs will have to work with other software vendors (like Microsoft) to get more business-oriented productivity tools on the MAC OSX platform - we need real choices.

WinXP seems the best bet. It should be second nature to know how to use a windows-based computer --> and that's only attributed to the overwhelming majority that use windows.

    So the deal is:

Not enough jobs and home users for Linux - unless you are a hardcore Unix/Linux person or just want to be an admin.

XP and MAC OS are still battling it out on the Home User market.

MAC OS is dead and relatively avoided by businesses.

    And finally....

VISTA changes the way the majority works with PCs - but does not offer anything new to businesses. Therefore, VISTA will just confuse workers and is just a waste of money. Maybe in the long run VISTA will woo the mob. But not this mob.
