Channel 10 & the Web

Posted by Ella Morton @ 12:24 37 comments

Channel Seven's recent ninemsn-esque partnership with Yahoo has raised an interesting issue: will television networks have to maintain a substantial online presence in order to stay relevant and competitive?

Let's take a look at the Web sites of the five free-to-air television stations:

ABC

  • The front page functions as a portal, with familiar categories such as news, arts, science, health and education. The science section is particularly comprehensive, and designed for a younger audience. Integration of ABC radio, including the ability to listen online.
  • Tech features: RSS/XML feeds, podcasts, mobile/PDA content, Flash games, online shop.

SBS

Yahoo7

  • Yahoo search engine and directory integrated with TV guide and content from Channel Seven shows, and Pacific Publications magazines.
  • Tech features: Customisation (homepage content, radio stations), online shopping, membership, widgets, Web-based e-mail, mobile content, newsletters, photo hosting, games, groups and a whole heap more.

ninemsn

  • Integration of Microsoft features such as Hotmail and Messenger. Search engine and categories similar to Yahoo7. Content from ACP magazines, Channel Nine shows.
  • Tech features: Videos, Hotmail, games, mobile content, online shopping directory, classifieds, membership using Microsoft Passport Network.

Ten

  • Upon entering Ten's online HQ, you are asked to choose your city, ensuring local relevance. From there...uh, well...you can find out about the TV shows and news presenters, and see headlines and local weather. It's basically a glorified TV guide.
  • Tech features: Um...links? There is a section called "chat", but it doesn't seem to feature a chat room or any kind of forum.

Hey Channel Ten...what gives? Big Brother and Australian Idol featured comprehensive Web sites which offered forums, polls, and in the case of BB, paid subscriber-only content. Both sites were massively popular, especially among Ten's much-prized 16-39-year-old audience. The sponsorship was cannily integrated into some of the content, and downloadable wallpapers, mobile phone logos and ringtones allowed the Ten to maintain a presence not only on people's TV screens, but on their computers and in their pockets.

Given the success of those programs' Web sites, why hasn't Ten made an effort to improve on its comparatively weak online offering? More to the point, does it need to? The rise of subscription TV and peer-to-peer downloading of show episodes certainly pose a threat to commercial television, but is the solution to embrace new media and forge alliances with established online entities? Nine and Seven seem to think so. It will be interesting to see whether Ten follows suit.

i think 10 is either clueless or lazy when it comes to the web. by the time they think of something to do, yahoo7 will be way ahead.

maybe they have no money david l -- 17/02/06 (in reply to #120129366)

how's 10's P&L by the way? maybe they don't want to invest in online because the returns aren't great? ever thought of that?

    10 lost the plot sam -- 17/02/06

10 lost the plot a long time ago. look at their programming. they hardly have the shows to match 7; even nine is struggling to match 7

channel 10 web site Anonymous -- 31/12/06 (in reply to #120129367)

channel 10 website is arrogant to the max!!! no where for feedback !!! no where for complaint!!! all it is as far as a site goes is a glorified television guide... I wanted to make a complaint about the programming for New years Eve.. inane stupidity by John Foreman and mathew newton reached sickening levels .. sucking one anothers ears etc: I fail to see as funny bath scenes equally as stupid ... self indulgent music .. definately not family entertainment for a ni8ght in with family for new years eve ...... strongly object to the actions of foreman and newton ...

Just another case... Anonymous -- 17/02/06

Just another case of an old type of media..in this case television, not understanding the web.

Kochie appreciation Ella Morton -- 21/02/06 (in reply to #120129604)

I have to admit, I dig Kochie and his Dad Jokes. Also, newsletters from Kochie and Mel and access to their programmed radio stations on Yahoo are a great example of Seven's savvy integration approach -- Sunrise might allow Yahoo to tap into a wider age range because it is introducing older people to tech in a non-threatening way (the Family Club).

Maybe Ten does need a Kochie!

Kochie's alright Mode Ski -- 28/04/06 (in reply to #120129606)

Sunrise is a great show; Channel 10's poor effort just doesn't compare to the genuine affection between the presenters on my favourite breakfast show.

The fact that they all seem to be genuinely having a good time with each other makes me overlook all the advertising.

Maybe 10's banking on web mark II Dave Abrahams -- 28/02/06

Hey maybe 10 is waiting for the web mark II , you know the web for those that missed it the first time.
But I fear a web MII would be secure (read controlled and censured), fast (read for the few who could afford it) and responsible (read designed by a government committee).

    news format Anonymous -- 21/04/06

I wish 10 would NOT have glimpses of upcoming sports segments interupting the news,or better still a sepatate sports segment altogether, that way we can switch channels to avoid them and the idiot presenter!

I wish Channel 7 would decide what they were up to Locomotion -- 27/04/06

Channel 10 may be behind on the times, but at least they have some consistency to their website.
However Channel 7 seem to be swapping and changing their domains, their content provider, and website style nearly once a year
First of all we had www.seven.com.au
Then they decided to switch i7.com.au
    Then it was AOL7.com.au
Then it was back to www.seven.com.au
    now yahoo7
    What are they playing at???
Why can't they just stick to a nice consistent seven.com.au and be done with it, change the service providers if they like but forget changing their domain name!

    /locomotion

I agree Mode Ski -- 28/04/06 (in reply to #120133444)

I agree, Locomotion. There's nothing more annoying than inconsistency, especially when it comes to websites. I wonder how much traffic yahoo7 would get if it wasn't for the constant advertising on TV.

    Big Brother Anonymous -- 23/06/06

I am so annoyed at channel ten for continuing to play Big Brother when other shows like Smallville are advertised at 7.30pm on Thurs nights then not shown. Big Brother is such a waste of time & is the worst show on TV at the moment, when I switch over to ten it is only to watch something else not a show that goes over time every night. Please put Smallville back on and AXE BB

    Programming Anonymous -- 26/06/06

Why has channel 10 ripped battle star galatica off air!!

    Smallville Glen Starbuckle -- 29/06/06

I am pissed off at Channel 10 putting off Smallville for 2 weeks and showing 1hr of Stupid Big Brother.

And try to complain to the DH's and you cant, because the phone is always engaged and they conviently have no email listed on their crappy web site.

Seven did the same with LOST and I completely stopped watching the dumb **** show. Wonder how many did the same?

How can a struggling ratings TV channel take of 1 of their winning shows like Smallville and replace it with a loser like BB.

We hardly watch any of Tens shows cause they suck with stupidity!

    where's smallville? Anonymous -- 18/08/06 (in reply to #120136866)

I am not staying up late to catch the late news with Sandra Sully and I wanted to see the storie on funded gas conversions for your car so I thought i would get the facts online earlier but this is not possible as 10's web site is very poor.

Why has smallville stoped? Martin Mckinnon -- 29/09/06

Smallville always stops for weeks at a time and now channel 10 have stopped it for good, is it gooing to come back on or not?? Coz i am getting relly pissed off!!!!

    Smallville Anonymous -- 06/04/07

What is Channel 10 doing. They play smallville when they want and when they do its all out of order. I wish 7 would take it on. I am so sick of the Simpson's back to back. Bring back quality Television.

Quality Telivision Adam McAllister -- 02/06/08 (in reply to #320077489)

Was over in UK a while ago. Their Quality of TV and style makes Australian TV look third world and a joke. A bit embarrassing really. This is accross the board also 2,7 ,9 and 10 with exeption to ABC sometimes.
WAKE UP AUSTRALIA ! There's so much more you could be doing!

    You are so right.....!!

ABC is brilliant, but, please, NEVER forget SBS. Both do a wonderful job. But, they are not commercial, and don't have to worry about "ads" which pay for the other channels, just like the BBC & Channel 4, in UK

i would like to comment on the remark made by one of your host (dlf ipl) "i will talk with fleming when he came back..... and he lost me, he definetly lost me". this comment was taken on fleming because he wore a traditional indian dress. Grow up, be mature on national TV atleast

Additional Stations Adam McAllister -- 02/06/08

Wondered when you are likely to make use of additional broadcasts on the digital channels 1,2 & 3. This goes for CH 2, 7 & 9 also. Whats happening with them. Some alternative programs and or subject matter is well in need.
Wake up! we're still in a backwater here.
