10 things wrong with Ten's download service

Posted by Ella Morton @ 11:50 11 comments

Yesterday I blogged about Network Ten offering full episodes of Supernatural for download from their Web site.

Last night I visited the Supernatural site in order to test out the service. As a result, I can comfortably list 10 things wrong with it. And these have been culled from a shortlist. Points for trying, Ten, but it seems you have a bit to learn about the workings of The Internets.

Ghost in the machine?
1. You cannot download episodes if you use Firefox or a Mac. This little factoid is buried in the depths of a largely irrelevant FAQ (more on that later). Using Firefox, you can get a fair way through the process -- the site allows you to register your details and obtain the necessary add-on apps for viewing the files. When it comes time to download the episodes, you'll receive a message saying the download is in progress. Only the download is not in progress. We sat around waiting for several minutes before giving up. It would have been nice to be informed of the Firefox incompatibility earlier. Or at all.

2. Contrary to my optimistic assumption in yesterday's blog post that the process doesn't require software installation, you'll need to install four separate applications (including Channel Ten-branded media management software and ActiveX add-ons) before you can view the video files.

3. You can't keep the episodes for more than two days. They self-destruct after 48 hours, thanks to DRM. A week I could understand, but two days?

4. You can only access downloads from one computer.

5. Your connection speed might not be high enough. Or maybe it is. It's difficult to tell what the minimum requirements are; Ten's Web site has a few conflicting suggestions:

From the FAQ

What are the minimum system requirements?
- A broadband Internet connection of at least 600 kbps

From the main page

Depending on your connection speed, downloading an episode may take some time -- it's best to do it overnight. The download works best if you've got a fast broadband connection -- 512 kbs or faster.

And kbs isn't a typo.

6. Speaking of the FAQ, it's full of a lot of irrelevant and confusing information. For example:

Why am I hearing some sound but my video is choppy, frozen or missing entirely?
If you have a broadband connection of at least 600 kbps but still have poor video quality, excessive buffering, or a total lack of video, this can be due to a lack of computer processing power or general traffic congestion on the Internet. Try not to run other applications while accessing streaming media.

Also, if you are accessing the video through a Local Area Network (LAN), you may experience excessive buffering or connectivity delays as a result of network congestion from the other users on your LAN.

Hold up. The episodes are downloaded files, not streaming media. Looks like someone's done the old Ctrl-C Ctrl-V on a generic FAQ.

7. The design of the Supernatural site is frustrating and illogical. There's no navigation menu; you need to use text links in order to get to the downloads, and there's no explicit mention of the need to register your details. The link to the FAQ is way down at the bottom of the page. If this is an indication of what's to come in Ten's Amazing New Web Portal, I am very afraid.

8. I struggle to understand what audience these downloads are targeted at. Dare I say it -- the kind of people who are into the idea of downloading episodes of a cult horror series are the kind of people who will have already obtained it months earlier using file-sharing software. I don't mean to suggest that the majority of Ten's 16 to 39-year-old demographic are rapscallions who get off on copyright infringement and piracy. But when the options are a) to download an ad-free, restriction-free episode file hours after it screens in the US or b) to wait half a year in order to download a DRM'd file that self-destructs after 48 hours and requires the surrender of personal details and four additional applications, it's obvious what people will choose.

9. Despite repeated attempts, I haven't been able to watch the episode I downloaded. A fellow ZDNetter has also tried and failed to get the first episode. No joy thus far, only error messages and prompts to download more add-ons.

10. I can't quite put this one into words. I'll use screenshots instead.

Overall conclusion? Ten needs to learn a bit more about the workings of online content delivery before launching any offerings. Otherwise they're just embarrassing themselves in front of their young target audience.

Kind of makes you wonder... gee whiz -- 16/01/07

Why would they bother when their target audience know how to get the content DRM free and can watch it when they choose...

Where is the designer Asurin -- 23/01/07

This is a good example of what happens when projects don't focus enough on usability.

Whilst the software can be expected to suffer from teathing problems there can be no excuse for the poor design of the website content(Associated with the file downloads).
Any website content should be designed with the users needs in mind, and this is especially vital when you are selling a product.
It is crasy that they haven't made the browser requirements blindingly obvious. And stupid that they didn't invest in a cross platform solution.

Even if they fix the buggy software, it will still be useless for people who don't use Explorer.

This is ridiculous. Anonymous -- 24/01/07

    Wake up TEN !!!!!!

You're not dealing with the grey haired luddites now, you're trying to market services at a tech-friendly young generation in love with PirateBay, iPods and DVDShrink!
What joke is this??..it doesn't work under Firefox??..MAs can't use the service? If MACs can't use it then Linuc users won't be able to either..this immediately wipes out 20% of the savvy desktop market!

Way to go TEN..... looks like this fiasco will result in failure.

Get with the program (pun intended). Make it cross platform asap otherwise you'll just be ignored and bittorrent will save the day!

    Sorry...typo Anonymous -- 24/01/07 (in reply to #320073622)

I did, of course, mean to say LINUX users, instead of Linucs users...you get the idea.

channel 10 making supernatrual for download ben downing -- 30/01/07

this is another great marketing ploy by channel ten.. NOT! crap like this is the reason bit torrent is the no 1 tv network in australia, along with massive wait times for shows (still waiting for tochwood) shifitng schedules (west wing) and shows being pulled off air mid run.

    why bother. Anonymous -- 01/02/07

I have not even looked at channel 10 download site, why would i bother. there are so many ways to download TV shows on the net. As i expected it seems from this Blog that network10 has proved itself to be **** poor.
I watch supernatural when i'm home as the choice on free to air Tv is lame. But if i wanted to use up my download limit downloading it i would be using Bit torrent and getting the latest shows Ad free.

I went to the site. I couldn't find anything I searched for by title (it was not there), so I decided to browse through the categories instead. The first several categories I chose had NO items listed. There is an old rule that says 'IF THERE IS NO CONTENT...DIM AND DISABLE THE LINK'. How hard would it have been to list the number of items(in 'parens') right after each category name?

    Nice idea on the whole...but...

    I HATE

sites where I can browse around for a long time, wasting my time on links that take me to nothing.

    ALSO

    1) there is bugger all on that site for well known content.
    2) there isn't much other content on the whole.

I really do not think that main-stream video medial people are ready yet for their version of the MP3 world yet, and they are resisting it...with the same effect it had on MP3 music. They are pushing consumers willing to pay a downloading fee for a legit copy, to go into the pirate world. STUPID TV and movie people.

Supernatural site is fine Anonymous -- 05/05/07

The Supernatural website design and concept is fine - it is simple and effective. There is no need for a navigation system on a site that only has 2 key links - i.e. "Register to Download" and "Download episode"

The website has triggered a huge amount of registrations to view downloads, and has been a success.

The success of a website should be measured by the overall result it creates, and the result of the website was the generation of a huge number of users to build TEN's database.

Huh? Anonymous -- 20/10/08 (in reply to #320078923)

Do you work for Ten or something? 'Success' is a term which encompasses a little more than 'OMG WE ARE MAKING MONEY WE ARE SUCCESS'.

I wonder how many people will be using it a month afterwards... oh no, wait, customer retention is totally irrelevant as any business will tell you. God, I am so stupid.

    Yeah.... right.
