Why call a 'new' product version 8.2?

Why would Symantec launch a new application but call it version 8.2?

The Symantec Control Compliance Suite 8.2 is a set of software tools designed to help companies adhere to regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley.

The application is based on technology from the BindView acquisition that was completed last year -- but according to Symantec executives "it is very much a new product".

Financial reporting is a serious business and pragmatic IT buyers might be less willing to trust the first version of a product.

According to Symantec's VP in APAC, the choice of version number was due to BindView's naming convention.

So is the version number designed to make IT buyers think they are purchasing a tried and tested application? Maybe it is to minimise confusion for existing BindView customers?

How much are your buying decisions affected by a product version number?
