Can Norton 360 be trusted?

Posted by Munir Kotadia @ 16:27 56 comments

Symantec is about to launch Norton 360 in Australia and although the product seems to have some interesting features, it will take more than marketing hype to persuade me that the company has stopped making bloated and unreliable software.

Following Microsoft's lead, Symantec is about to launch an all-in-one security suite designed to protect SOHO users from threats such as Trojans, viruses, spyware and phishing.

The package goes one step further than Microsoft's OneCare Live offering because it provides 2GB of off-site backup space -- allowing very important files to be automatically duplicated on Symantec's servers for safekeeping.

However, over the years I have witnessed Symantec launch umpteen versions of its Norton Antivirus and Internet Security products. Each year the company boasts how it is the most trusted name in security and how its products keep millions of users safe.

The problem is that whenever I write about a Norton product, my e-mail inbox becomes inundated with people sharing their bad experiences and loathing of all products that come in those little yellow boxes.

Symantec has brushed off these complaints by saying I only get such a reaction because of the sheer number of people that use Norton products. In actual fact, I am told, the vast majority of Symantec's customers are very satisfied.

Unfortunately for Symantec, I have years of experience using its security products and have spent a significant proportion of my time helping people try and rid their systems of the dreaded software. Virtually everyone I know that came into contact with Norton Antivirus or one of its counterparts would complain about the user interface, massive resource requirements and lack of actual protection.

So the big question is: has Symantec learned from its mistakes -- will Norton 360 be any different from its predecessors? Will it actually protect your computer and most valuable files or is it simply a massive marketing campaign?

In October 2005, I spoke with Mark Bergman, CTO of Symantec's global operations. He explained that the company had a vision where users' computers would be automatically backed up to secure their most valuable data.

At the time, he said: "We are talking about how to create a system whereby the nature of my having put [the files] on my machine ... they are protected".

Soon, that product (Norton 360) will be available locally. I thought I would try and find out just how reliable those automatic backup systems are. In case of disaster, how sure is Symantec that the data automatically backed-up onto its own servers is safe? Does it provide any guarantees?

Symantec's e-mailed response actually made me laugh out loud.

"Symantec recommends consumers take a layered approach to backup. For example, using the backup functionality of Norton 360, as well as using an external hard-drive or other data protection option," a company spokesperson told ZDNet Australia in an e-mail statement.

It seems Symantec doesn't trust its own infrastructure enough to guarantee the safety of its customers' backup files.

Microsoft has already shown that its security products can't be trusted to protect the company's own operating system. Just look at the recent example where a flaw in Windows Defender put anyone using the so called security product at risk of a highly critical worm attack -- this included Vista users. In the same batch of patches, Microsoft also plugged a critical gap in OneCare.

These developments do not exactly fill me with optimism when looking forward to the rest of 2007.

  1. Constructive criticism is only constructive if you highlight alternatives Angelo -- 02/03/07

I have been involved with both IT and IT type characters for most of my working career, I find that one of the biggest challenges in the industry is that – at its very heart, it doest not lend support to itself, each program, company and individual is quick to point out the flaws and bugs that are inherent in the ‘other’ systems but seem to turn the volume down when the competition actually improves the product – you tell us that Norton is NOT the way to go… you tell us that Microsoft is NOT the way to go – thank you. Perhaps you would consider a succeeding article titled – “Comparative analysis of Anti-Virus solutions – the right way to go.” The reality is that you are being simply being irresponsible by telling the ‘world’ that these systems are questionable, and then proceeding to highlight the issues, without actually offering any constructive alternatives.

I fix PC's for a living, and Norton has got to be one of the worst pieces of software ever.

It slows down even the newest and most powerful computers and takes about 2 minutes to load.

It always displays useless notifications and has many useless features.

AVG is free, fast and much more effective.

  5. Norton Security Fools Anonymous -- 02/03/07

Norton's products are "has been's" in my considered opinion. For products that a user is required to pay a licence fee it certainly has its fair share of failure. If I have to run a windows machine again it will have Avast! for Home running one it because quiet frankly payware anti-virus is not worth money.

try and compare any third party product avalible in market that to a symantec product. Symantec products will be at the top. There are some bad experiences also however mostly are fixed. Today symantec does protect 50 million + user;s from internet threat. Pc's are safe much more than yesterday..

  7. Sheer Nonsense Anonymous -- 03/03/07

You say that Norton's response is foolish and quite laughable. I disagree with you. Norton is correct in saying that people should be using a layered approach to their security. It is simply common sense.

Layer 1: My own common sense.
    Layer 2: Norton Products
Layer 3: Spy Bot Search & Destroy
Layer 4: External 500 GB Hard Drive for back ups.
Layer 5: Use Norton Back Ups as well to back up the back ups.

Using these five layers - I have NEVER had a problem with viruses, trojans, hacks, or anything malicious. The only thing that I did that was stupid was spill coffee on my laptop.

I think that you ought to encourage your readers to realize that layers are best in addition to using Norton.

You are simply misguided. Maybe you have an axe to grind. I don't know

Look guy. I have it. And I'm telling you Norton 360 is even more useless than its former versions. Now even less customizable, and generates more CPU overhead than your regular leading AV software!
But no, seriously. My university requires all systems to use McAffee in order to be able to gain access, and after using my laptop both at home and at school, I've had no attacks, no problems, no adware, and behold - I can actually use programs without them being blocked. Amazing.
When Symantec releases a decent product, I'll eat this LCD monitor I'm staring at. I swear it.

    3. Norton 360 is not as good as claimed Anonymous -- 15/07/07

I stated using Norton 360 4 months back with Vista and XP. After 1 month, N360 is blocked during Vista start-up. The technical support team has tried to guide me to resolve the problems through emails. I removed and reinstalled several times and the problem still exists. In the case of using N360 with XP, all out of a sudden, N360 blocked me from assessing a few websites (due to Engine Error) which I had assessed without any problem before. I had to removed and reinstalled N360 to resolve the problem. I had subscribed N360 for 2 years since March this year and I am thinking of abandoning it now. I has been quite frustrating for me over the last 2 months with N360.

  10. I agree with common sense Claude Tremblay -- 13/06/07

Some form of protection is needed, regardless of the type of security used. 90 % of the problems are associated with windows security flaws. Its like trying to patch a leaking basement foundation.
Steps like regular backup is very important, seeing that the cost of backing up is so inexpensive why are people not taking advantage of this? Only one word comes to mind...pure lasyness.
    I use these steps:
    1. common sense. 2. Trusted sites. 3. e-mail philtering. 4. Regular Backup. 5. 360 on one machine, antivir on the other. 6. use of firefox for browsing (this in itself is 90% of your security.

    2) Bought and installed Norton 360
    3) Have a PC full of problems including system freezes and unbelievable slowing of operation. XP send error reports to MS on a regular basis now. The backup facility of 360 just does not work.
    Very poor software.

  12. Horrid Norton 360!!! Patrick London -- 17/07/07

I always thought Norton products were uselss and left them to use McAfee a while ago. I just bought a new PC with Vista which was working like a dream till I installed Norton 360. My PC is now much slower and constantly freezes sites I used to open usually which means I have to restart the PC to be able to open up the sites again but it soon freezes afterwards. It's come up with a new one now. I can't access my hotmail account. Its completely blocked me out of it saying it's revoked this organisations (hotmail) certificate which is ridiculous. I'm about to uninstall it and throw it in the bin. Its been a nightmare and the helpline costs a fortune. Tell anyone you know that's thinking of buying this to run for the hills. There is so much better software out there that also isn't as expensive as the useless Norton 360.

  13. Norton 360 keith belson -- 03/08/07

I used to be a Norton buff in the days of Norton Commander with DOS but after Vista and Norton 360 I have lost faith. Installed 360 and then It worked o.k for a week after which live update would not work so I went the technical support online chat. Spoke to Varun who told me to uninstall using the Norton Tool then remove registry keys relating to Symantec. Use Explore and remove all folders relating to Norton, Symantec and Liveupdate. Did all that, rebooted and re-installed. Half way through an error occured and asked me to reboot again. When I did my dvd drive was not recognised. Checked device manager and found that there was an ! in a yellow triangle. The usual thing happened when I tried to reinstall the driver, it reported it as o.k. The code was 39 so I googled that and found a registry fix which worked. Next I re-installed again to get another error code 9999.171. went back to "Chat" and the guy told me to update the Windows installer patches. Downloaded and installed all patches and reinstalled again to get the same error. Went back to chat and it would not work with Firefox and told me to use Explorer. Did that and explorer came up with an error and had to close. So now I cant access the online chat to resolve anything. I have given up and downloaded the free AVG virus protection which works just fine.

    2. Agree with Norton 360 on VISTA Ferhat Yildirim -- 11/05/08

bloody hell with Norton on vista, installed a downloaded image version of vista ultimate intergrated which required no hassles if you know what I mean. Then nstalled all my drivers for my hardware etc... just when it was time for norton 360 I installed it perfectly but PC began to be slower then when I had it on XP. I had trouble updating as it crashed not even half way through and had difficulty booting and had to use the vista DVD burnt from downloaded image to get my screen up and when ever i try to reboot or boot it wont. I have to use my bloody vista dvd and recover and rester system which i never restored before.

I dont get it, worked perfectly on my XP for many many many many years and this PC mind you is a good one. 300GIG HD, 1.8GHZ, 2GIG RAM, CD/DVD LD DRIVE. I believe that vista has something to do with it yes... but then again comeon norton 360 AIO on vista wouldve been a dream for me but no had to use up alot of resources and reck my retouine in installing a new operating system. I spen F""""ing 3 days with 4hrs sleep trying to resolve this issue with norton and vista and found it.

( VISTA AND AVG FREE EDDITION. HUH!!! ) DONE. mICROSOFT RESPECTIVLY SPEAKING HAS ALREADY GOT DEFENDER AND FIREWALL WITH ITS INTERNET SECURITY SETTINGS, USER ACCOUNT CONTROL PLUS ITS AUTOMATIC UPDATES. When you have vista, the hell with norton 360 guys. AVG is the go!!!

If you have XP my friend, then norton 360 is the go. Dont get me wrong norton is good but too much resources are used and it slows the PC.

I bought this product w/i the last five days. Installed it and liveupdate wasn't working. Contacted support, let him fix it by taking control of my computer, he said reboot and all will be fine. I rebooted and no, liveupdate still does not work and now it's telling me I need to uninstall and reinstall. I do so. Liveupdate still does not work. So i try to contact support again and now it says there's a problem with support stub and we will have to close. we apologize.. blah blah blah. so now I can't even contact support for their help. i'm not a computer guru so I'm at a loss as to what to do. $60 down the drain, I suppose.

    Constant memory addressing errors
    Norton 360 shutting down
    Real Player no longer works
    MPG files no longer work

  16. Norton 360....Total disaster! Evelyn Smith -- 22/09/07

I have been using Norton Anti-virus for years. All was fine, except for the high price.

I upgraded to Norton 360 and my system was destroyed! The install went smoothly, and then I made the mistake of running it! All software that had not been preloaded in my computer was GONE. Much data was also GONE. Most was backed up, but not yesterday. Nothing was moved to the Recycle Bin. Nothing was renamed and tucked away somewhere. I received no queries, warning, etc.

Support suggested a System Restore. XP says it can't do one. Support now agrees that the only solution is to reformat my hard drive and reload everything. This is 3 years worth of software and data. Symantec says the problem is closed. Ha! I have many hours ahead of me rebuilding this whole thing from scratch.

All programs I installed myself were put in folder C:|My Programs, not C:\Program Files. I didn't think this was a crime. Some of these programs put their data in their own sub-folders. Apparently Norton 360 saw a lot of executables and just trashed C:\My Programs.

What is it going to do to your computer???

Unfortunately I now join the ranks of the anti-Norton army.
I have always used norton AV thinking it to be the best alternative (maybe it still is). However, with 360 everything changes!! trying to use backup in weekly mode does not work unless results windows are manually closed. This leads to a 3 week session with 'symantec support' 3 weeks during which i have done everything but format my hard drive while jumping through a fiery hoop, basically 3 weeks of fob offs while they hoped i would give up and go away. Dont walk away and say i've wasted the money or they'll keep doing it. I am currently demanding a refund for my 8 licences. Hitting nortons pocket might work walking away wont.

After hours of trying to fix it, having no idea that Norton was the trouble, I discovered that by disabling the Norton 360 firewall, I have my network back. The firewall correctly lists my other computer's IP as a legitimate exception to the firewall, but this turns out to be a lie.

  27. Norton 360 Storage Scam Anonymous -- 20/12/07

Running a business from home - I naively thought it was a good added security feature to take advantage of Norton 360's online storage. The theory was that I could run backups nightly and would have a separate offsite storage. Their website propoganda talks about 'seamless' backup of new files. WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU - until you've purchased their storage is that - and I quote from one of their emails: "it may take up to 17 hours to restore 1 GB of data". That's 17 hours for 1GB of data. And it takes that long for both uploads and downloads. I naively purchased 25GB of data - which, if I were to use it, would take me the better part of 18 days to upload. Now this is just their time estimate -I've tested it with my ADSL2 connection - and it does take at least 17 hours to upload 1GB, but normally falls over before you can get access to any backup files or complete a backup. This of course makes the storage completely useless. I emailed them and asked for a refund - and they have been strangely silent. After 2 months of follow ups - I think my $120 is gone for good.

  29. Norton 360 Anonymous -- 08/01/08

Installed Norton 360 on 3 home computers. The Vista laptop and an older XP desktop seem to have survived the ordeal (so far) but the other desktop (a previously perfectly running, virus-free P4-2800 w/ XP Pro) is now getting its hard drive reformatted. (hopefully my data backups are as good as I think they are).

This computer previously had NAV installed in various versions and updates from 2005 till 2007. Although I had some issues with NAV 2006, the 2007 version was enough to convince me to stay with Norton for one more year.

Initial install went smooth enough. As a precaution I used the Norton Removal tool before installation just so any previous junk wouldn't interfere with the installation. Within a half hour I had Norton 360 running nicely and performing all its scans. Everything seemed to work fine and computer speed didn't seem diminished. I was actually excited that I had found a Norton product that performed as promised!

Within hours I noticed that the Norton menu screen wouldn't respond when I attempted to change settings. On three seperate occasions over the next 2 days the nice fellow at Norton support remotely fiddled and diddled settings, removed and reinstalled and did registry edits on my machine. Each time the computer came back to functioning for a few hours but then would mysteriously begin to act up after being left idle.

The last time it started to act up I had to reboot to get Outlook Express to work. Email scanning was so slow that attachments couldn't be downloaded. As usual the N360 menu screen was frozen as well. So I made one last fateful call to Symantec support.

After a short chat this last tech told me that I would have to use a "sledgehammer" to fix my problems. I suggested that I was not interested in a "format and reinstall" scenario . He assured me of no such scenario but that the changes could not be made remotely by him because they had to be done in safe mode. With some trepidation I agreed to accept his 4 page email with instructions on removing Symantec products manually from my registry and installing some Microsoft Updates. I am by no means a registry expert but I have made a few succesful minor revisions in the past without blowing up the system.I figured if it was a few simple deletions or changes I could muddle through so I dutifully backed up the registry and proceeded.. Little did I know that he was asking me to perform over 500 deletions to the registry! Call me silly for trying this but I guess somewhere along the line I deleted an extra registry key. On reboot I was greeted with a nice message that a line in the system32 folder was missing. According to my computer store, the registry backup sitting on my desktop isn't accessible anymore so I'm getting a format and reinstall done tommorrow. I guess I'm also in the market for an anti-virus program that works without taking over the whole operating system.

THANKS NORTON! You've really made me a loyal user now!

I know some wiseguy will chime in and say I had no business being in the registry and they are absolutely right.

But my reply to them is 2-fold. Firstly, why would Symantec sell a consumer product that needs registry editing to properly remove it and secondly, what clear thinking tech support person would ask an end user to try doing it?

Needless to say, NO Symanted product will ever be installed on my computers again and I wonder if I should be removing N360 from the other two computers before the "background tuning" destroys them too.

Norton 360 .... Just the latest piece of crap in recent years from Symantec.

Oh yeah. The online storage idea really is a joke too. I tried uploading data from my wife's laptop. Very few internet connections have the upload capacity to utilize this feature. After a few hours of trying I decided it was just another uselss gimmick.

  30. Norton 360 Ian Crooks -- 28/01/08

I’ve been using Symantec products, and Norton products before they were bought out by Symantec, for many years. It distresses me to say that the quality and usability of the products has been degenerating markedly, particularly over the past 2 years.

On Saturday this week (26 January), I purchased a new laptop for my daughter, and at the same time bought a CD version of Norton 360.

I have to say that 360 is a rubbish product.

Before burdening my daughter’s laptop with the product, I de-installed from my laptop (using the Norton removal tool) the version of NIS I had been running, then installed 360. My laptop, I might add, is the primary means by which I make my living,.

After an hour or so of use, 360 started using over 90% of my processor, and the offending process (ccSvcHst.exe) had swelled in size to well over 500MB. After another 2 hours, it was over a gigabyte in size and still using over 90% of my processor. I was unable to terminate ccSvcHst.exe and unable to shutdown 360. I was trying to do some work but couldn’t because the system was responding glacially slowly. Re-booting made no difference.

I e-mailed technical support who came back to me very quickly (the only high point of this episode). They proposed a rubbish solution that I estimated would take me around 7-10 hours to execute. Given that the work I was trying to do would have been earning me around $150/hour (if only I could do it!!) it was a no-brainer to buy something else to replace 360, so I've mow bought Zone Alarm, installed it and its running with no problems, and I’ve canned 360.

However, even though the problem is now solved, I’ve lost five hors of production, and its cost me a copy of 360 that’s essentially unusable.

As mentioned above, I was a NIS 2008 user, and it had some significant problems, but nowhere near as bad as 360. There's clearly a problem with the ccSvcHst.exe component of 360 - it has a memory leak or something similar because it just keeps growing, apparently without end as long as there’s swap file space available. I’m still a Ghost user, but it also has enough serious problems that I sometimes wonder whether I could ever restore from a Ghost image.

The problems with 360, and the other Symantec products, need to be fixed, rather than sending users off on a useless, complex series of tasks that will change nothing. And, taking a look at some of the detailed instructions at which technical support pointed me, there are errors all over the place and they recommend things that no-one except an expert user should ever do (like stopping almost all services, disabling drivers, etc).

I've told this story to Symantec customer relations and asked for a refund. It'll be interesting to see what they do (if anything).asked

  31. Norton 360 Ian Crooks -- 31/01/08

Well something good came out of Symantec after my prior post about 360. Within 5 hours of e-mailing Asia-Pac marketing, I had an e-mail response saying they'd get customer service to call me. Within another hour, someone from customer service (in Singapore, I think) did indeed call and apologised for any inconvenience. A short time later another person called and confirmed that I'd get a refund when I returned the installation CD.

Well done, Symantec - if only 360 was as efficient, I would have been delighted.

  32. Norton 360 nicky rye -- 17/02/08

I repair pc's and the internet security program I tell my costumers about is Kaspersky as it found more adware and virusws and blocked more attacks than norton 360 and it dose'nt need alot of processor time to run and it tells you when you have a virus and you can get rid even in the system restore points you have as it recovered my laptop and pc from total re-installation as my main pc is my editing unit it would have taken 4 hours of installation also use an external hard drive for your backups as well the prices have come down to affordable price to make it possable

  33. N 360 horror stories Anonymous -- 21/02/08

I have used N360 for past 2 years and have had some small problems that have worked themselves out, overall i am OK with it. But after reading the blog i now understand maybe why my computer takes 5 minutes to start up and not as fast as i think it should be. Because my renewal is now due i am considering using AVG free as it is recommended by lots of people. However after reading all the problems people have trying to use N360 how much problem am i going to have un-installing N360,.

  34. Norton 360 - slam then dunk then Trend Micro Anonymous -- 05/03/08

In order to install 360 was forced to remove everything of NSW Premier, including Ghost. 360 would not install with MS Installer failure. Norton pushed me off to MS and MS shrugged. My HP extended support offered me free Trend Micro Pro. It's not muhc better. Hard to install (but eventually did at least). TM is harder to use and I'd love to go back to Nortons. I'll wait untill they offer it to me for free.

  35. N360 fine - back up useless Antony Daamen -- 06/03/08

Well I have N360 on 3 machines all networked, all working fine! start up time on alll 3 computers is faster then with N Internet Security 2006 and N system works 2006.

I had problems with the auto-update with my 2006 products - had to go manually every week to back up - but this one works beautiful. don't even notice it is doing this.

Back up is useless for two reasons:
    a - 2gb is to small,
b - N360 spends hours backing up, then is tells me it couldn't back up everything: my back up files done by Norton D'oh

So I set back up to manual (and dont use it) and all works fine. It finds all my email viruses (and deleted them as requested).

I received a msg by MSN, but I recognised this as a virus, so deleted it myself.

As I like to point out: YOU are the first layer of virus control. Don't click on pictures of Britney Spears even if it does come from your best friend!!!

  36. It works, but at a cost Anonymous -- 19/03/08

Have had Norton 360 installed for 11 months and it's done its main job, i.e. kept the baddies at bay. Cons are that boot time has more than doubled, and usability slows to a trickle while a scan is being run. Lack of customisability/ control is also a drawback.

  37. PC frozen! Anonymous -- 08/04/08

Got N360 recently and since then my PC regularly get completely frozen. Even the CTRL-ALT-DEL wont do the thing. As a result, I have to reboot it everytime, losing my data and stuff. I paid this soft about 120 € (for - damn me! - 2 years). Is there any alternative to deinstallation? Any patch yet? I'm really thinking about calling the Symantec guys to have my money back!

  39. NORTON 360 ON VISTA Ferhat YILDIRIM - Syd/Liv/Aus -- 11/05/08

In my countless readings in countless forums I have decided to post something very important in this forum. I hope who ever has the same problem can find this when googling it.

Dont install norton 360 on your vista operating system if you are to change background settings and appearances. It does not boot back up unless you figure out how to with your vista dvd. 'system restore' via boot disc.

THE PROSESS HOW I REALISED NORTON AINT FOR VISTA

    1 - I installed vista
2 - Then my drivers and then software
    3 - Norton 360 with no problems

On step 3 after installing later during my usage online I started to update Norton 360 whileI configure vista 'userfriendly' nothing major so that my vista operates the way I like it and looks the way I want it to look, I was changing my appearance settings and bang''' screen went funny, screen went black while updating norton 360. I was filled with anger as this was my countless attemp with installing vista and having troubles before but nothing like this. I was pisted'''. I tryed so many restarts 'boots' but it wouldnt boot 'start'. so I decided to reinstall vista and give it another bloody go while I promised myself this will be my last attemp with Vista.

I placed my Vista intergrated DVD copy into the drive and restarted so I can reboot. While I followed the 'press any button to boot from disc' scenario I did and when Windows Vista was ready to install I looked carefully at the bottom and found 2 options. anyway.... one option was to repair my computer or somthing beyond those lines and the other I forget.

I chose to repair my computer option and it required the DVD. I was cheering becouse I had the DVd already in there and so I followed the promps as I can barely remember from just 2.5hrs ago I chose to repair windows. Repairing windows option fix the problem with booting and I could see my screen again. I was in mind orgasm when I seen my screen again.

All this made me not think, 'as I already have in the past' I acted upon a rule for myself. Respectfully speaking Microsoft Windows Vista and Norton 360 dont work together. (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE VISTA AFTER INSTALLING NORTON 360)

  40. OW AND ANOTHER THING Ferhat YILDIRIM - Syd/Liv/Aus -- 11/05/08

When I got my screen up 'vista again' I noticed Norton 360was un-installed. yes not installed.

So I decided to investigate and determined the fact that Vista has found a conclusion in its repairs and uninstalled Norton automatically.

I found the Norton 360 and Symantec folder still sitting in My Programs and so proceeding to deleted them after checking once again that It was not installed.
