Spend enough time in the IT industry and you'll soon realise that many of the new trends we see are cyclical: fat vs. thin clients; various development methodologies falling in and out of fashion; and shared vs. distributed services.

The pendulum swung towards shared services in New Zealand this week, but they are not alone — many Australian state governments have also joined in. Patch Monday discusses the situation and why some people do not feel shared services are cool enough.

Microsoft is making in-roads at Australian universities, with the University of Sydney joining the University of New South Wales and the University of Queensland as Microsoft customers. Shared Pain Jeff Davis -- 01/06/09

Shared Services arrived in Australia for its latest run a decade ago in the Commercial arena, unfortunately it is usually a cynical theoretical exercise based on statistical cost a benefit profiles which remain untested. In the usual Australian government manner, the Commersial arena is heading out ot this trend and selling the snake oil dealersonto the government.

Unfortunately it is just a non productive reshuffle of deck chairs in order for certain sectors to profiteer off the gullible.

    Shared Services don't work.

It is something that has been learnt in the UK private sector for many years.
