DOT COM numberplates: Just $400k

Posted by Renai LeMay @ 17:08 5 comments

A foresighted Australian investor is selling NSW numberplates spelling "DOT COM" on online auction site eBay for a cool $400,000 minimum bid.

"I have had these plates for many years and turned down many offers over this time, but it is now time to realise the investment," the seller, who News.com.au has named as 43-year-old Sydney business consultant Sean Selva, wrote on the eBay page for the auction.

"These are a real head turner, with regular looks and finger pointing," his sales pitch said. The eBay auction also has a "buy it now" price of $450,000, for which bidders can guarantee to win the auction instantly.

Selva told News.com.au he bought the plates in 1997 for just $300 and claimed he turned down a $500,000 offer for them during the height of the dotcom boom in 2000.

    What a mug Sol Reubenstein -- 18/04/09

He should have taken the half mill and be done with it. No-one will pay almost that for a number plate representing an era that fell like a lead balloon even though their was no economic turmoil at the time.

    What a shame Anonymous -- 19/04/09

Gee they didn't sell at $400K after the greedy, dumb **** knocked back $500K for a $300 outlay.

Like dot.com shares, he'll be lucky to get his $300 back now.

    What a shame Sean.

    What a winner ! Mr Big -- 20/04/09 (in reply to #320130543)

    Apparently, a selection of his other expensive plates up for sale include;
    HIH
    Babcock
    ABCLearn

Timing is everything, eh ? :)

leaping with full gusto onto the bandwagon.... Anonymous -- 23/04/09

... continuing with the scorn and derision poured on the poor sod.... how did he figure "now" was the time to realise the investment ...... without further ado, it has to be said - Ladies and Gentlemen, the man on crack!

    CAR.COM Anonymous -- 17/05/09

A few years back I used to sell news papers on street corners in the early morning, and CAR.COM plates were advertised for sale in there for a about 4 weeks at IIRC $5000 (initial purchase would have been about $500). Amazingly enough one morning a car with those plates pulled up next to me - seeing the plates, I asked the driver if he had bought or was selling them - Turned out he was selling them, but bought a paper and gave me a $5 tip for being sharp.
