The Finnish company has moved to assure its 100-plus local staff that the cut backs will not impact Australian operations, or result in changes to full-time or contractor headcounts.

Nokia Australia spokesperson Tracy Postill said local staff are composed primarily of sales and marketing.

"There will be no impacts to Nokia Australia, or changes to staff," Postill said.

"It is good news."

The cuts come under moves by newly-crowned CEO Stephen Elop to revamp the company and make it more competitive in the smartphone market.

Nokia aims to simplify its Symbian smartphone group, streamlining application development and intensifying focus into its Ovi services.

The phone giant reported a €529 million profit for the third quarter this year, with sales up 4.7 per cent to €10.27 billion.
