Activists today gathered at the Apple Store in Sydney's CBD to deliver a petition with 250,000 signatures calling for Apple to employ ethical manufacturing processes in the production of its future products.

A group of 10 protesters delivered the petition in a wheelbarrow, asking Apple to respond to recent criticisms, most notably in the New York Times, that conditions in the Chinese manufacturing plants where Apple products are assembled are so bad that some workers suffer permanent physical injury. The petition is asking Apple CEO Tim Cook to develop worker-protection strategies for all workers involved in the production of Apple products.

"I don't think it matters where they make them, so long as the workers are being paid a fair wage, and aren't being subjected to hazardous chemicals, and they aren't forced to stand for 18 hours a day so their legs swell," said Paul Ferris, one of the signatories of the petition, which originated on the website Change.org.

Ferris explained that he was on the verge of buying an iPhone when he read about the conditions in the Foxconn manufacturing plants in China, and is now holding off until Apple improves conditions for its workers and he is confident that the company is producing "ethical" products. He said that he understands Apple is not the only major electronics maker using these plants in China, but he feels that Apple is in the best position to initiate change.

"Apple is the market leader ... they are the leaders in design and product innovation; I signed the petition because I think they should be leaders in [worker's] conditions, as well", said Ferris.

The delivery of the petitions in Sydney coincides with similar activity around the world overnight, with petitions being delivered to Apple Stores in New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, London and Bangalore.

"We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain," an Apple representative told CNET in the US. "We insist that our suppliers provide safe working conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes wherever Apple products are made."

This statement reiterates the core message from an email by the company's new CEO Tim Cook to Apple staff a fortnight ago. In his email, Cook spoke of Apple's inspection process for manufacturing partners and its work in educating workers of their rights, and also in changing the conditions for these people. He vowed to his staff that Apple will not "stand still or turn a blind eye to problems in our supply chain".

Talkback

The New York Time article and subsequent CBS piece where cheap sensationalistic fluff aimed at the less educated.

I suggest a follow-up article by the Times looking into conditions at non-Apple factories in China comparing work hours, salary against national average, age of employees, and the names US companies using this labour.

Anyone with a high school level understanding of macro economics understands that Apple cannot single-handedly change the working standards and salary levels of Chinese workers. You cannot simply double salaries at one factory. Additionally, salaries are relative and can’t be compared to any Western nation without taking into account the local cost of living, housing, etc.

It is not Apple’s responsibility to change the socioeconomic conditions of the Chinese labour force. There is little doubt that Chinese workers are subjected to longer working hours and lower salaries than in the west, and conditions can always be improved, but it should be noted that these workers come from all over China for what are regarded as high salaries compared to rural income.

Interviewing one or two ex Foxconn employees about the long hours and tough management culture is ridiculous. You could find the same complaints from ex-employees about most companies including the New York Times. Long hours, tough boss, stress; who hasn’t experienced that at some point in their working lives. Life can to tough for the less educated in society regardless of their country of origin.

Those that have taken up this cause and are protesting Apple’s “tolerance” of it’s supplier’s treatment of its Asian employees are incredibly naïve. Most will have little information on the actual working conditions at Foxconn, the salaries paid relative to the national average, or Apple’s policy on supplier responsibility. Apple hold it’s suppliers to some of the highest employee working standards in the world.

One wonders whether the protests directed at Apple over workers rights are truly altruistic or driven by competitor influence? Apple is an easy target as they have chosen to publish the results of there supplier audits. Before we crucify Apple lets just shift our gaze to other US companies using Asian labour and compare working conditions. Let’s see their audit reports...what’s that? no report?! Wonder why that would be?

Oh please, get real! How many people really care about where and how their toys were made! The whole 10 people in Australia! And how many of them have been to China and know what's considered to be normal there? I bet 90% of things we have are made in China. And I bet conditions of those making your t shirt are not much better than those of making iPhones. But I don't see people ready to throw their clothing, most of electronics, kitchen appliances, etc away. Let's pick on Apple instead.

Slavery is when you don't have a choice. Those who make iPhones in China have a choice of not working at that factory - that's not a slavery.

Oh, and I also need better working conditions. I have to go down by elevator at 9:30am each day myself and spend the whole 15min ordering coffee and chatting to colleagues while drinking it instead of coffee being delivered to my desk!

Get real!
